I was invited as a semi-finalist to Shipman Scholars Weekend coming up. Is anybody else going? Does anyone know what exactly the discussions are going to be like? Are they more like interviews or conversations over some given topic?

I’m a senior here and I’m in Shipman. I don’t think I’ll be there this year, but I can answer some of those questions. They’re more like discussions. You’ll get some questions thrown out, and then people will take turns talking about what they think. The questions are meant to be interesting and fun; they’re not the same as typical college interview questions.

Thanks, tetrahedr0n!

This may be a dumb question, but when people refer to Shipman Scholars, is that just for the 15 people who are selected, or the 50 who were invited and who all get money? Thanks :D

I’m pretty sure it refers to all who come to Michigan with a Shipman award. It is sort of an unwritten rule that the kids don’t even inquire of each other as to who got big money and who did not. Everyone is a part of the Shipman Society and there is no distinction made among them as to the full ride people and not.

I’m jealous of you.

Thanks everyone, this helped a lot!!

@motion: Sorry… -_- haha :]

This is exactly right.

Last question [and to bump the thread for anyone else who’s going this weekend], does anyone know if being nominated for Shipman allows you to get into the Honors College? I didn’t write the essay for the Honors, and it’s probably too late by now…would this make a huge difference if I go to UMich, and get Shipman, but not be in Honors?

It would be unusual for someone to be a Shipman scholar from LSA and not be invited to honors program. Mention it to someone if you get the opportunity, and I bet you get an invitation. The point of the weekend, aside from determining who gets the bigger scholarship, is to get you to come to Michigan, if an invite to honors will do it, it should not be a problem to get one.
