shipping boxes to college

Can any of you Tulane parents give some advice on the best method/service to use to ship boxes to Tulane prior to move-in day?

Tulane has had a special deal with Fedex. You’ll get info about it in the mail, along with big orange stickers with your last name and mailbox number on it for the shipping boxes. Then they will have several tractor trailers lined up on one of the cross streets on campus with all the boxes. We didnt ship anything, but it looked pretty efficient. I used those orange stickers on care packages I sent to DS throughout the year. Worked out well!

We used this service to have an area rug shipped from Walmart to the dorm.
Worked like a charm and made it easy for us to simply pick it up on campus and then just over to the dorm.

I don’t remember exactly how it worked (I think S had a note in his PO Box). What jym says above sounds right.

All boxes arrive through Tulane’s mailing office, so it wont be an issue. You can pick your carrier and it will still be delivered. Yes, Tulane has ties with FedEx, but that’s totally up to you whether you choose to ship with FedEx.

when do the package labels get mailed to you? and when do ppl usually ship out their boxes?

There will be plenty of time to get the labels, the instructions and the stuff shipped. They have to assign mailbox numbers first, before they can mail you the labels and instructions. The accompaning letter will tell you when to mail the packages.

They will send you a mailing in early August with the details. The exact day to ship will vary by who you ship with and where you live in relation to Tulane. You can use any of the major shipping companies but I recommend either UPS or FEDEX.

We live in CT. It takes four days for UPS ground to ship from CT to NOLA. We shipped so that the boxes would arrive at Tulane on the Wednesday or Thursday before move in.

The process works very well. It is very easy to use and quite reliable. there were 4 tractor trailers full of boxes the year we arrived. It took less than 5 minutes to get our 5 boxes out of the trailers. There were people with carts to help get the boxes over to the dorm.

ohh haha ok. i thought u had to ship them out in july or something!

^^^ The school doesn’t have the space or the interest in storing anyone’s belongings for any length of time. Plus security, humidity, etc. Having hre boxes arrive a few days before you do is a good plan.

fedex was great! don’t overpack your boxes- weigh them if you can, one of ours broke, and your student has to carry them to thier dorm from the truck
