This is jumping the gun a bit but I was wondering how all of you are planning to ship any items that you may have or how people have done it in the past. What service did you use, what di you ship, and how much did it cost you?

Bump…I wanna know too, good question!

My D goes to GW and we live in Maine. We ship occassionally (maybe a box or 2) and store over the summer. We found alot of info and vendors at orientation. Upper classmen may have better advise for NU though.

You can ship to your address at Northeastern I think a week or so before you move in, and they’ll just keep it there, but you won’t know your address until they mail your official moving-in packet in july or august.

My mom ships me care packages (like most parents do) using USPS’s flat rate stuff, but they wouldn’t fit anything of substantial size. Shipping is a little expensive, in my opinion, so unless it is things you can’t live without and can’t buy here (we have target, bed bath and beyond, etc), then I don’t really think its worth shipping.

Think of it this way- you have to buy new sheets and bedding anyway because the beds are weird sizes (twin extra long). Most people rent fridges from school so they can get the microwave. A fan is bulky, and its super cheap to buy at target. I think the only things I didn’t buy when I got here was my clothes, which your parents can ship you half of once it gets to late fall/early winter.

Ah interesting. Yeah, i’m trying to find one that would be suitable to ship something like an iMac. I feel like I would be taking a loss if I sold it and bought a new one there. They are rather expensive new. So, anything that would be able to ship something of that size safely without costing TOO much would be a great solution.

Is an iMac a laptop? If not, you really should think about buying one. It’s technically possible (sometimes- I’ve had teachers who practically required them) to go to college without a laptop, but it’s usually pretty difficult.

I investigated having things shipped to Northeastern, and it was possible… just can’t do it too early (call them for details). Also check into pre-ordering stuff at Bed/Bath/Beyond (or Target - I know that is accessible by public transportation) and picking up at Boston location.

Oh right, also forgot about the pre-ordering. I didn’t do it personally, but a friend from my high school who goes to MIT pre-ordered EVERYTHING at bed, bay and beyond. Then when he moved in, his parents rented a car for a day (they flew in) to move the stuff to Cambridge. Smaller stuff you could just carry on the T to Northeastern.

And to the above poster, Target is the one Northeastern sort of tells people most about (so most people think its on the T). It is definitely possible, but people don’t do it often because of the hassle. It’s either the red line, which makes you transfer and then you have to walk a bit to get to Target, or it’s taking a pretty unreliable bus from Ruggles. Most people’s favorite time to go is at the beginning of the year when Northeastern charters buses to shuttle back and forth from campus to Target for a day. The only bummer is that this is when every college is doing the same thing, so the store gets pretty emptied. Bed, Bath and Beyond is on the D line (green) right next to the Fenway station. To walk, it’s right around the fens. It’s also by a Staples, Best Buy (not the one on Mass Ave), and the Regal Fenway movie theater.
