To be honest, when I applied to NYU I thought I had a fair chance of getting in. I applied to Stern, but I got rejected. Not even LSPed. My general stats are:

2080 SAT (1400 CR+M)
3.94 GPA
3/77 Class rank
Full IB Diploma

I got accepted to colleges like UVa(OOS), UMich(OOS), Emory and Carleton. Waitlisted Hopkins, UChicago. Of course, I know Stern is the second toughest colleges of NYU (1st being Tisch), but I'm still surprised. Few of my friends in my school got LSPed, and they had lower stats than me.

I'm not trying to say that NYU is an inferior school to those I got accepted, but I'm simply surprised that my admission is completely against the U.S ranking.

Any explanations?

P.S- I thought my NYU supplement was pretty decent, too.

You go to a school with only 77 people in your class o___O?

There’s no explanation for anything. They don’t just look at stats you know. Essays, ECs, Volunteering, extra classes, etc. all come into play. To get into NYU you need to be smart && have a bit more.

Stern’s average SAT 2part is around 1450, so they might have been looking for a little something more to make up for it… (Do you have credentials in your EC’s or teacher recs that would suggest interest in business?) Also, admissions these days can really seem to be a crapshoot, so don’t take the rejection personally. I expected to get into many schools that I ended up getting outright rejected from (for example, got into Stern, but outright rejected from Hopkins? All my EC’s and academics pointed to a science major at Hopkins, and I had no business EC’s whatsoever).

You have to count the enter to make it 10 chars haha

Maybe NYU was just looking for a more diverse pool. I think there was nothing wrong with your application, there were just others that they preferred. To be honest, Stern was the only school that accepted me. Georgetown, Cornell, UVA, and William and Mary waitlisted me, so I really have no clue how I got in

Interesting, pwnzal… good thing that you got accepted to Stern, though!

I don’t remember exactly what I wrote in NYU supplements, but I clearly remember there wasn’t any long essay…just 3~4 short prompts…(and a 4~5 lined poem…)

I don’t think EC was a problem… I mean…there’s a reason I got accepted to Emory or UVa, right? I actually think they were great! But that’s just me.

Well NYU Stern isn’t exactly my top choice so I don’t REALLY mind…but an acceptance is always better than a denial.

I’m sure there were some kids who were amazed and happy they got in. It’s all acrap shoot. Like others have said scores and GPA are not everything.
