Shocking: Budget cuts mean that profs may have to teach more than once a week

Christopher Neck has filed a grievance with Arizona State U. about his increased teaching load....Mr. Neck, an associate professor of management, went from teaching just once a week to teaching five days a week. "They hired me to be a place kicker," he says, "and now they want me to be a linebacker.".

Colleges Are Calling Professors Back to Class - Faculty - The Chronicle of Higher Education

Oh No! Welcome to the American work week Professors!

ITS REALITY

Two things: One, most profs work five days a week. They do research and publish papers which boost a school’s reputation. Professors are hired to do research at research universities, not teach. That’s not the prof’s fault.

Secondly, they have a right to be irritated. If you were hired with the promise of working X job, but instead were forced to work Y job out of nowhere, you’d be ticked off too.

I guess the question is whether there was an agreement, explicit or implied, that the professor could keep that same job forever. If not, then why is he complaining? He can do the job, or quit. Likewise, the university can offer what it takes to keep him, or lose his services.

Many of my professors already teach more than once a week, especially the ones who teach MWF classes. This makes no difference to them.

I don’t know any professor at my uni who only teaches on day a week. Most teach at least 3, and sometimes all five days.

^Same. Though some of those heavily into research may only teach for an hour a day.

What? Most professors work much more than the standard American 40 hour week. There’s more to being a professor than teaching.
