I am buying clothes etc. for my son who will wear a coat and tie to class everyday. Athletic shoes are not allowed to be worn for classes. What type of shoes are boys wearing at prep school these days? I will buy a pair of loafers, but thought a 2nd pair of non-athletic shoes would be a good idea. Do boys still wear LL Bean shoes or is that a thing of the past? Any other suggestions?

sperry topsiders

So-called “dirty bucks” remain a reliable option.

Hardsole moccasin - sheepskin lined (is actually in the “slipper” category on Zappos.com); however many BS boys have doubled this as an appropriate casual shoe, with much comfort and convenience - on sale on line for $66.

hypebeast! lol

sperrys seem to be pretty popular for guys at my school.

These mocs sound similar to the Merrell shoes that my son had been wearing for years at his former private, all-boy day school. If I’m mistaken, please advise. Thanks.

Sperrys are what my son wears…with most everything. He did see a pair of Clarks boat shoes that he may go for next. They weigh almost nothing. I can usually find his Topsiders for around 65 on sale. Does anyone know if the Clarks hold their shape as well as the Sperrys? Alas, he won’t stop growing.

Not certain if the mocs are similar to the Merrells, however the mocs are ultimate in comfort, convenience and can even be worn without socks…Zappos.com !!

I LOVE my Sperrys and I will have to replace them. They’re good for girls too! :)

Izzy, what kind of Sperrys do you have? I have them in orange canvas. :-)

Classic L.L. Bean duck boots / shoes are good to have during the Winter season. http://www.llbean.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/CategoryDisplay?categoryId=503394&nav=pp-bc&storeId=1&catalogId=1&langId=-1

I wore “duck shoes” back in the day at boarding school. Do kids still wear them?

I checked out the Sperry’s on line at Zappos. Do you tie them? My son wants easy slip on shoes that is why I thought of the LLBean “Camp Moccasins” that are similar to the “Blucher” but you slip on rather than tie. I just don’t know if these shoes are still popular? I don’t want to buy shoes he won’t wear.

The hardsole mocs do not need to be tied - they slip on with or without socks, alot of comfort due to the sheepskin and very avant garde at the prep school setting.

My son wears the two hole sperrys and only ties them when they come undone. Tip: get the leather shoelaces wet, then tie them. They’ll stay tied for months. They can very easily slip on and off, with socks or without. He also likes them during wet weather because they grip well without having a big clunky lug sole.

As far a popularity goes, I don’t know. He’s not at prep school.

I saw Duck boots being worn by a couple of boys the last time I was at Deerfield. Warm, dry feet never goes out of style!

You can’t go wrong with Bean Camp Mocs and Bluchers. Camp Mocs are easy-peasy to slip on and go. Comfortable too. They’re basically LL Bean’s version of the Sperry Topsider. The Bluchers are still casual, but a tad dressier than the Mocs, so they’d be good to wear on occasions where something a touch nicer is warranted (eg., weekly sit down dinners).

Last, Birkenstock “Boston” clogs are super comfortable and easy to wear. The kids seem to like them a lot, but these shoes might be a little too “granola-ish” for some folks.

You see a lot of Duck boots, albeit with Goretex and other new technologies. (On both girls and boys. In different lengths, too.) At least that’s the case at Groton.

Any types of mocs/boat shoes will do. You see a lot of Sperries, LLBeans, Rockports, etc. I’d personally recommend the bluchers. They are very very comfortable, although I wouldn’t consider them an more dressy than the Sperries. You sohuld really wear dress sheos for sitdown dinners. Also lot of kids wear loafers without socks. Brooks Brothers and Cole Haan seem popular.
