Shooting at Purdue

Shooting at Purdue University - ABC News

[Purdue University - Alert: Shooting reported in electrical engineering building](Campus Safety Status - Campus Safety Status - Purdue University)

And a shooting last night at Widener University, and a shooting at a Phila. Charter School earlier in the week.

What the heck is going on.

<a href=“IndyStar: Indianapolis Star, Indiana news, breaking news and sports”>IndyStar: Indianapolis Star, Indiana news, breaking news and sports;

Prayers to all

There was also a shooting this week at a Roswell, NM school where the shooter was 12 years old!

Too many guns is what the heck is going on, and it’s pretty clear that things will never change.

Another day, another death. Yawn.

I grew up next to Detroit- old news. It’s only getting attention because it’s affecting places where middle-upper class kids congregate.

I just can’t read or look for reports of school shootings anymore. As a society we’re not interested in concrete proposals to address the new American ritual. Sad.

These school shootings are not new.

I’m pretty sure many did not realize that the day (or day after) the man was shot in the theater, a school had its own shooting.

It’s happening too frequently that I’m afraid we may become desensitized. I hope I’m wrong.

We know two kids at Purdue and I’m sure their parents are thankful for cell phones! They knew almost immediately after the lock down that they were fine.

There’s another thread in the Parent Cafe about this.

The victim, Andrew Boldt, was a senior who was working as a TA at the time he was killed.

http://www.heavy.com/news/2014/01/rip-andrew-boldt-purdue-university-shooting-victim/

Sounds like a personal situation and not some larger undirected hostility.

News story says both suspect and victim were seniors and TAs for the same professor.

http://www.jconline.com/article/20140121/NEWS03/301210011/Shooting-Purdue-campus-suspect-custody

That doesn’t make it any less tragic.

Students newspaper discusses the in-class reaction.
[Professors deliberately ignore shooting, endanger students | The Purdue Review](http://www.purduereview.com/5/professors-deliberately-ignore-shooting-endanger-students/)

This hits a little too close to home for me. My son’s HS used to run against the victim’s CC team. What a waste.

Now, imagine the shooter having a vendetta but no access to a firearm. Would we be seeing the same story today?

MizzBee, that blows my mind! I don’t even know what to say to that.

This is so sad. Andrew sounds like he was a very bright, likeable guy with a promising future. As sally305 said, what a waste.

And the idea of professors deliberately ignoring established protocol to lock doors, etc. is appalling.

And the Purdue administrator quoted in the news has just been appointed as the new incoming President at Virginia Tech. What is that, karma? I hope his new employers grill him about how a professor can ignore a ‘shooter on campus’ alert. That kind of response ended in a lawsuit at VaTech.

LakeWashington, The issues and lawsuit re: Virginia Tech involve more the lack of alert to students and professors once an initial shooting took place on campus(which was originally thought to be isolated). Alerts are now in place on campuses and to have any of the Purdue professors ignore them is ridiculous. One professor at Virginia Tech, Liviu Librescu, is known to have saved all but one of the students in his class by barricading his door against the shooter while telling his students to jump out the windows. He and only one of his students were finally shot dead in his classroom.

Yes, I don’t understand these early reports. How could the professors ignore an official alert? Can’t these reports have been inflated? Apparently there was an international professor who didn’t understand the reality of the alert, too - seems that faculty training has been lacking. Most universities include that in the faculty orientation nowadays, especially at large colleges.

Many of these reports are unfortunately true. Some professors ignore the warning.

It is unfortunate and shines a bright light on the poor faculty training. My campus has been having still left and right. The faculty have demonstrated professionalism and consistence ij their performance.
