Shooting today at Kirkland (merged threads)

Marite, Reflectivemom, and Guitars101, I am with you on the delay being too long and will be sending an e-mail to the Harvard administration about this. Given that my DD lives in Kirkland, I am also concerned about how a stranger gains entry into the house.

gadad, I am not sure if I would agree with what you said about non-threatening individuals being able to gain access to the dormitories of most colleges. I have seen some colleges that have a security guard or student worker at the entry point to a dormitory that control access by checking to see that the student has a dorm-specific ID. Clearly, though, this would not be practical in the H houses that have multiple entryways.

Well, the Harvard student perpetrators have generally used knives, not guns.

This is so very very sad. The more info that comes out, the more confused I get. The victim seems to be a very nice, well liked, young man. Why would this happen. My big question now is… WHO ARE THESE 3 PERPETRATORS WHO HAD ACCESS TO HARVARD’S DORM???

Apparently the police do not suspect Harvard students. From the Crimson article:

“We’re not suspicious of any Harvard students being involved in this shooting at this time,” Leone said. “The investigation is extremely active.”

@guitars101- As Justchecking stated above, many students are moving boxes into summer storage on campus, so many doors are propped open to expedite the process.

Out of state students must juggle packing, carrying boxes during the limited hours of open storage, and studying for finals. It’s a hectic time. I could see how someone might fail to close a propped open door.

I do understand, as I also stated above. My son is one of those out of staters packing his stuff. It seems strange to me that someone running away from 3 people (according to reports) would randomly run to a door that is usually locked and find it open by chance.

it will be interesting to find out the final report

Justin Cosby, the victim, was a Cambridge native and a graduate of CRLS. He graduated the same year as 11 current Harvard seniors. I don’t know if he knew any of them well, but he certainly would know his way around Harvard.

You wouldn’t have to run to the door and try it in order to get in during move-out. It may have been standing wide open, with a box or a brick underneath. This was the norm back in my day.

I did some googling last night and I cannot find the article that I read. But the points that I read and found interesting were that the young man was supposed to have been with his longtime girlfriend and said her would “be right back”. The mother did not know he had gone into the Harvard campus area and was therefore not concerned when she heard about the shooting. It was later that night that she learned that her son was the victim. I guess what I find curious is that he was going to “be right back” to somewhere no one seems to know and then he ends up being shot dead. What was he going off to do?

When we were moving our freshman into a dorm this past fall, we typically “tailgated” after another student if our kid (with the key/ID) wasn’t right with us as we were hauling a load. I am assuming the same thing happens a LOT when students are moving out.

This is so sad and scary. We also “tailgated” when moving our son last fall :(

Here’s what I don’t understand. In the past, when there have been shootings at a school, it has been all over the national news. Case in point … the Wesleyan shooting just a few weeks ago. How did this event not make it to national news? Odd.

Twinmom, EXACTLY! I really don’t understand the mystery behind this event. Someone died!!!

Yes. And Harvard is a name brand to begin with. Did someone work to keep it out of the news?

Perhaps because it was not a Harvard victim or Harvard shooter, it wasn’t newsworthy. It appears to be a random event unrelated to the H population, except for the location.

I read about it on Huffpo. I think I read something on NYT.

The number of security personnel have been increased per a note from
Dean Hammond; also security staff may demand to see credentials of
people entering/leaving the dorms as the semester winds down through
Sunday May 24th.

check out [this Crimson article](http://www.thecrimson.com/article.aspx?ref=528262</a>)

Makes a lot more sense now.

^^^ yup, makes sense^^^

another question… who were the people who shot at him and ultimately killed him? were they Harvard students? yikes, this is scary
