Shopping for Freshman Move-In

Is anyone aware of stores in close proximity to Tulane, such as Bed, Bath and Beyond, Target, etc. in order to shop for freshman move-in. It looks like the closest Bed, Bath and Beyond was in Metairie. Also, would you know if you can shop where you live and ship ahead to Tulane, or place your orders where you live and then pick up at those stores? Thanks

You are correct. The closest stores for move-in shopping are in Metairie. You can order online to be picked up at the store for Bed, Bath and Beyond. And I know I’ve seen stories on here about people shipping their stuff by FedEx - don’t know about others. I am sure that there will be more info available on all of that at orientation.

Tulane will send you a package with move-in instructions that includes FedEx labels. You ship your stuff ahead, it gets on giant FedEx trailers that line up along Newcomb Place, and ROTC people move it all for you to the dorm on move-in day. Everything else you buy/pick-up in New Orleans when you get there, as kreativekat says. Apparently the Target in Metarie now closes for a night as well and only Tulane people shop there that night, if I understood correctly. There is also a WalMart toward downtown New Orleans, and various stores along Magazine and Tchoupitoulas that can be useful.

I do know that they just started a “Target Day” for freshman shopping last year, and continuing this year! They take all the freshman to Target after it closes at night and all students shop there together…

Thanks to all. Greatly appreciated!

Actually, the Target is right next to the Bed, Bath and Beyond so it is a one stop shopping trip. The school does take freshman that are interested during the first week of classes to the Target one evening after it closes. My DD did this and said it was a great time.
DD has reported that due to student demand, the shuttle to Target and the mall will be restored in the fall. I guess the students complained that the shuttle to Wal-Mart was not enough. DD is really happy as this saves time and bus or cab fare. A good move on the part of Tulane.

I just went on the housing site for Sharp dorm and it says the beds are standard twin, not extra long (as we were advised earlier). Planning to buy all bedding this weekend and now don’t know what to do. does anyone out there know for sure what size the beds are?

just found my own answer on the 'what to bring ’ page…Sharp had standard sized beds (and is the only dorm that doesn’t have extra long. Just thought someone else might be confused too…

The Bed Bath and Beyond College area will give you all the specs for your dorm. But be careful if you print out the checklist, because the ‘checks’ didn’t print for me. (as to what you should and should not bring).

I’m not shipping anything in advance (thanks Vitrac for confirming I’m not the only one).

What I have read on the FB Tulane Parents page (a great resource too) is that most kids do want a printer in the room.

Bonniemichelle - you need xl - your son is in monroe rooming w/mine:)
