you will have no problems with that… there is a shuttle to Bed Bath and Beyond during orientiation which isnt too far away, plus huge shopping complexes in the Brentwood(?) area, which is a little SW of campus

newprov - you are correct, the Galleria and related shopping is in Brentwood, and Clayton which is next to it also has tons of stores and is easily accessable. Either very cheap taxi rides or the regular city bus, if there are no shuttles from Wash U at the time. They are both short rides.

Almost any store you can think of is within a short drive from WashU. Target, Macy’s, Bed N Bath, Walmart, Best Buy, Abercrombie, The Gap, Old Navy, American Eagle, Hollister…etc. You get the point! There are a number of malls with all the stores you have in any US city. You can definitely buy everything you need right near the school.

I do recommend renting or getting access to a car to get all your shopping done. While you can use public transportation to get to the malls, it’s not the best way to do it when you have alot of shopping to do and alot to carry back to school.

Oh, and if you’re there without your parents, I think Enterprise has a special deal with Wash U because the founder was a Wash U student that they let students rent cars even if they’re under 25.

@nooob, actually I can’t remember if I specified during orientation. I’ve heard several people remark that during orientation there is a shuttle, so I’m hoping this is true.

But I guess even so, the worst is that we’ll have some heavy loads to carry.

Anybody have any experience with UTrucking? I’ve heard both good and bad.

There is also a Home Depot and a Sams Club on Hanley between Manchester and Eager Street(same general area of the Target). if you sign up for the WE car program, you can rent a car by the hour so if you don’t get everything you need during orientation week, you can get easy access to a car to go shopping for an hour or two. My son and his roommate would rent it every now and then. There’s also an Office Depot very close to campus. If you don’t use UTrucking, you can still ship boxes to school on your own. You just have to pick them up at a central shipping/receiving location on the South 40.

I’m flying to Wash U, straight from my summer job at a sleepaway camp. I have two options- either go shopping for everything in June and ship it all there in August, or I can wait until I arrive at Wash U for orientation and then buy everything I need at Bed Bath and Beyond or wherever. Which is the better option? Would nearby stores have everything I need?

bambikumbayah, assuming you have access to a car when you get to WashU, you can easily get everything you need once you get to school. The only thing you need to consider is which “hassle” are you more comfortable with-- the hassle of shipping or the hassle of having to run around buying everything during orientation.

For some of your items, you can go to your local Bed Bath& Beyond, select the items to purchase, and the order will be ready for pick up at the store near campus. This way,you won’t have to be concerned that the St. Louis store (actually in the city of Brentwood) will be out of what you want. If you have BB&B ship directly to school, you have to have your campus box number and need to make sure the packages arrive only a few days before you do. We did not do this, but many people do. The Target store which is right near the BB&B was ready for the students and had a lot of items. For basic toiletry items there is a Walgreens within walking distance of campus.
