Shopping near Berkeley?

Where do mosst people go to shop for clothes?

Oooo! Shopping...my field of expertise.

There's not great clothes shopping in Berkeley, since I'm not really into the vintage/used clothes scene. There's an Urban Outfitters on Bancroft, and it's funny because on campus, EVERY girl is using the same book totes that they sell there. A little expensive though. There's also this place called Bancroft Clothing that sells a variety of everything at pretty good prices (I found Rock & Republic jeans there for only $49!) Used to be a Gap, but it closed.

You can go to Emeryville, by taking the F line (AC Transit), for big box retailers. There's Gap, Banana Republic, Abercrombie, Victoria's, etc. and their sales are quite good, better than the ones in SF (b/c more people shop there I guess so they run out of the good stuff more quickly?)

Then of course there's San Francisco. I haven't been terribly adventurous and found really cool boutiques yet, and I generally just use BART and get off at Powell, which leads directly into the SF Shopping Centre, which has all the stores mentioned above plus American Eagle, JCrew, Nordstrom, Benetton and more. Within walking distance from the BART station is the LARGEST Forever21 ever, an enormous (flagship?) Gap, H&M, Zara, French Connection, DSW, Macy's, Saks, Neiman's, Paul Frank, Old Navy, and more.

Emeryville? Is it the Insider's outlet? How far is it away from Cal? And how far away is SF Shopping Centre?

Emeryville is right by berkeley. Its not that far. SF is just a BART ride away. Its about 6 bucks round trip.

where can one go to buy some ralph lauren or lacoste shirts?

Ralph Lauren and Lacoste -- Nordstrom and Macy's sell both (in SF)

Bancroft Clothing also has some Lacoste, at least for women (not sure about men's)

What is considered "casual" wear on the Cal campus? Formal?

Isn't there a Wet Seal right near campus as well?

Hey...the CC girls should go out shopping sometime?!?!?

yea I saw Wet Seal near campus when I visited for Calso

Oh, yeah, there's a Wet Seal down Telegraph. There's also this place across from Smart Alec's that sells Cal gear on the first floor, and in the basement they sell every screen tee imaginable, pretty cool.

ysirk -- Emeryville is a city. Well I don't know if it has city-status officially, but it's a place. Maybe 40 minutes by bus?

What is considered "casual" wear on the Cal campus? And formal?

Uhm. Casual wear is generally the jeans/tshirt/hoodie uniform. There are girls who get dressed up for class, but why one would want to go from Dwinelle to Pimentel wearing heels is beyond my comprehension. Wear whatever you want; nobody really notices or cares as far as I can tell.

Formal for what? Internship interviews? Career fairs? Frat formals?

there are girls at Cal who wear heels to class?

There are probably some out of about 12,000. shrug

they sell men's lacoste shirts at urban outfitters as well for whoever asked that question. best shopping bet for more expensive clothes = union square

best place for lacoste and polo shirts is ebay, because the vintage ones are much nicer cut (more fitted.)

Union Square is hard to beat on the west coast. Much more character than your average high-end mall too.

I would add the outlet malls, a drive but worth a detour on your way to Carmel/Monterrey (Gilroy) or Tahoe (Vacaville.) The Gilroy outlet mall is huge.

Best place to shop for clothes though is Paris, in early January or July during the sales. A real workout.

They sell Lacoste at the S5A-- at least for women. Shopping in SF is def. hard to beat. If you can get to Haight and have some extra money in your pocket, Villains Vault is a very awesome. There are a couple hard to find brands there (mainly Tsubi / DVB Rock & Republic) but it's only worthwhile if you've got a hankering for premium denim.

AND THEY'RE OPENING A BARNEY'S THIS FALL IN UNION SQUARE!

As in Barney's Burgers?

OMG THERE'S GOING TO BE A BARNEYS NEW YORK!? How exciting. If only I wasn't constrained by that college student budget of mine.
