so i've heard of union square, that big shopping center @ sf
the problem is that i dont know how to get there
how would i get there from the berkeley bart station?
anywhere else in sf where i can get some nice shopping going?
oh and what are some places where i can get some nice/cheap food?

Take BART from Berkeley station to Powell Street station; it is about a 20 minute ride on the Daly City train. Nordstroms, Bloomingdales, Macy's and lots of other stores are there.

Yay, shopping! My specialty =)

Yeah, there's a HUGE shopping center called the San Francisco Shopping Centre. It recently expanded and has basically every store, including a Bloomingdale's and Nordstrom. Basically, just take any BART line heading into San Francisco and get off at the Powell station. You don't even need to leave the BART station to enter the mall; there's a direct entrance. In the mall (the new section), there's a GREAT high-end food court in the basement. The Coriander Thai place is really, really good.

Then there's the rest of Union Square. Exit the Powell BART station or the mall, and look directly across the street -- there's a big GAP and Forever 21, along with a bunch of other stores. If you walk up a couple blocks, there are even more shops: Sephora, Macy's, Urban Outfitters, H&M, etc. If you go to Union Square itself (not the area, but the actual square), you'll be surrounded by the very high-end stores (Prada, Gucci, Chanel, etc etc)

Another food recommendation: the HUGE Virgin Megastore on Market & 4th (right across from Old Navy) has a Citizen Cupcake cafe at the very top floor. Super yummy cupcakes and amazing paninis/grilled cheese sandwiches.

Use http://transit.511.org/tripplanner/index.asp if you need better directions.
