Shopping?

Students and/or Parents,

I am wondering where students go to purchase misc. supplies nearby?

I have seen the shopping center (while in the bus during the bus tour), i think it is called University Village.

Does anyone know what stores are in the University Village shopping center?

Are there other shopping centers nearby, close enough to walk to?

I realize that the bookstore has a wide assortment, but prices in college bookstores are not always the best.

I am looking for information on where students go to purchase:

Food. Grocery Stores. (for snack food in dorm room, cereal, sodas, etc.)

Drug Store. Discount Store. (for shampoo, toothpaste, deodarant, other misc.)

Movie/Cinema/Video Rental:

School and Office Supplies. ex:Target, Walmart, Office Depot, type stores.

Clothes

When i do a google search, i find the following, which is a start:

Do students use the following locations to shop at?
I did not find a market or grocery store?

This URL link, which i found from a USC thread from a year ago, contains some good pictures of University Village.

If you look at each picture, there is a description on the right side of the webpage, about half way down. It is helpful.

I have to say, the Shopping Center looks new, and clean. I can imagine that the Starbucks probably draws a crowd, especially near Finals week. I am pleasantly suprised. My kudos to whoever took the pictures, they are good qualify.

There are some good pictures of the USC campus. I am glad that I found this link.

Yes, I CAN picture my son in these pictures, going to USC. Biking to class, skateboarding, walking, etc. USC is truly a beaufiful campus. There pictures do not show the full beauty of the campus, but it is a good start.

There's a Superior Grocery Store in the University Village, the selection is fairly limited, but if you don't have a car it's sometimes the best you can do. If your son or daughter will be living on campus in a dorm rather than in an apartment he or she will most likely be purchasing the snacks using dining dollars rather than at the grocery store. There are a couple of Ralph's markets in the neighborhood, but they are not extremely close by, close enough to walk to occasionally, but not something I prefer to do.

There is a Staples on Figeroa which I consider to be within walking distance, most would disagree with me. It's a fair distance, but a pretty safe walk.

There is a neighborhood nearby that has an assortment of stores that have fairly good prices. I would venture to say that I am not representative of the typical student as I will walk to places that are fairly far away, as long as I feel I'm going to be safe getting there, but I'm happy to suggest what I think are good places for making purchases.

Thanks, greatly appreciate your information.

Just curious, for convenience, do you ever shop at the bookstore for misc items? Or are the prices prohibitive, and you therefore go elsewhere?

I follow the logic for using "dining dollars". I just wonder if dining dollars are best used for actual meals, instead of snacks, so that the student won't run out of dining dollars for meals. Make sense? Maybe it is an incorrect assumption. Maybe the dining dollars go far enough for both? If so, do the dorm food locations also "sell" misc food (snacks, cereal, quart of milk, 6-pack of soda, etc.) so students can have a small stash in their rooms? I have heard and read that each room has a small combination microwave and refrigerator. Is is large enough to put a few sodas, quart of milk, etc. ?

thanks.

Trust me, the dining dollars will go much further than just meals. At Commons and Trojan Grounds, there are a lot of "miscellaneous" foods and snacks. Pretty much every eating place besides EVK and Parkside has this kind of stuff. The microfridge is big enough to put a gallon of milk, a couple sodas, fruits, and then some. The freezer is pretty small, but you can put the small Haagen-Dazs ice cream containers they have at Commons and Trojan Grounds. And dessert from EVK.

There's a Ralphs both north and south of campus. The southern one on Fig is closer, but some people think it's really ghetto. I didn't mind too much last time I visited. I haven't been to the one on Vermont. There's also an Office Depot on Figueroa, "walking" distance (as defined by jessetfan).

I occasionally buy misc items at the bookstore because it's more convenient than going off campus, but it is more expensive.

Great information. Exactly what I was looking for. Thanks. Sounds like food & snacks are not a problem, not the purchase of them, nor the storage of them (with the refrigerator/freezer), and I am gussing the consumption of them occurs without any problems as well. My son will be pleased to hear about the freezer, and the amount that can fit into the Refrigerator. Just like home. :-) Ice Cream b4 bed.

One thing to remember about the microfridge is that it must be shared. My fridge currently has copious amounts of fried rice in it, thanks to my roommate's boyfriend's mother. Doesn't leave a whole lot of room for my stuff, not that I put a whole lot in anyway.

I remember there is a video rental store in UV, though not the list. Ralphs at Vermont & Adams is a nice one, but I don't know they have one south of the campus. If you like to venture a little bit south on Vermont, there is a K-Mart at Slauson. I bought a lot of stuff there which is a lot of cheaper than most of the stores.

BTW sometime USC bookstore can be cheaper for some computer electronics stuff than those online discount stores.

I remember the pictures were done by uschicka on this board. The grocery store was still old filthy 32 we all loved:)

Ralph's is better than Superior when it comes to selection, but when you are in a hurry and don't care about selection, then Superior should suffice.

The bookstore actually has good prices and selection on computer stuff, if you need that.

RE: UV - Like everyone else said, Superior will do if you're in a rush and live in the dorms, but it doesn't have the best selection. There's plenty of snacks at Commons and Trojan Grounds that you can spend your dining dollars on. Don't forget about Cafe 84 too, which has a Jamba Juice and pretty good food.

Typically, I go to the UV if I need to put air in my bike, buy some electronic item (Radio Shack), or feel like eating international food (food court). There's also a pharmacy there, but the pharmacy at the Student Union should meet all your needs.

There's also a Smart and Final across the street from campus on Vermont if you want to buy in bulk.

In terms of the bookstore, I find I only go there to purchase USC clothing, and small school supplies (blue books, binders, paper, etc.). Not that I don't support the bookstore, but textbooks are ridiculously expensive, so I recommend you buy them off of Half.com, Amazon, or search on BigWords.com or CampusI.com. I probably saved about 60% of the price I would've paid to buy the books in the bookstore USED.

Is there anywhere on campus you could use dining dollars to get a small breakfast like toast? It seemed from our visit yesterday like EVK was only "full meals," and it might not make sense to use one of the week's meals up if you just want something light like a single item. Any suggestions?

Also, we understand there is a Fatburger near USC. Does anyone know how close it is, and is the area OK?

Thanks!

Yes, at Commons there's toast and "small" breakfast items, especially at Seattle's Best Coffee.

PBK Mom, the Fatburger is up Figueroa, if I recall correctly. But I've never been there, so I couldn't tell you anymore than that.

You can find small food items also at Cafe 84, Tutor Hall, Popovich Hall, Doheny Teahouse, and Trojan Grounds, in addition to Commons.

Many thanks for the helpful answers! Best wishes --

I forgot about Doheny Teahouse...they have a good assortment of croissants, muffins, and other pastries.

Hey, well I live around the area....and there is an office depot on figueroa, right down USC.
