There's a Superior Grocery Store in the University Village, the selection is fairly limited, but if you don't have a car it's sometimes the best you can do. If your son or daughter will be living on campus in a dorm rather than in an apartment he or she will most likely be purchasing the snacks using dining dollars rather than at the grocery store. There are a couple of Ralph's markets in the neighborhood, but they are not extremely close by, close enough to walk to occasionally, but not something I prefer to do.

There is a Staples on Figeroa which I consider to be within walking distance, most would disagree with me. It's a fair distance, but a pretty safe walk.

There is a neighborhood nearby that has an assortment of stores that have fairly good prices. I would venture to say that I am not representative of the typical student as I will walk to places that are fairly far away, as long as I feel I'm going to be safe getting there, but I'm happy to suggest what I think are good places for making purchases.
