Short Answer and Extention?

So for the application, you have to extend the short answer, does that mean that you don't have to write the short version of it? Or do you have to have a short version and a long version?

you need to write the short answer on the back of the common app.

that said, the essay on the yale supplement does not have to be an extension of your short answer. apparantly the yale admissions office had a lot of ppl contact them over the question, and they've said that you can write about anything that is significant to you (which of course can be the activity on which you wrote the short answer).

so it's bascially 3 for yale:

common app long essay

common app short answer

yale supplement activity essay

those three should be all different?

No.. the common app short answer and yale supp can be on the same thing.

yes...can be..but doesnt have to be..

if they are the same thing, then can you not do the short version?

Mine were the same thing and I didn't do the short version.

can i write different things in the common app short answer and yale supp?
and if i'm using common app also for other colleges, do you think i can still leave out the short answer and send extended answer to them?

1) you can write different things for the short answer and yale supplement
2) i think that you should still fill out the short answer section for other colleges, and not send your extended version because some colleges don't want to have to read a 500 word essay instead of a 150-200 or however long it is short answer.

Well my question is.... I wrote the long one first and then trimmed it down to fit the short common app prompt. Would it be OK if there is some overlap on the two? Like the long one has some of the phrases from the short one?

Why would they ask you for two essays on teh same topic!! Gah!

Just write the long one and put "please see attached essay" on the short answer. Or even just leave it blank. I doubt it matters much.

this supplementary essay is very confusing!!

so basically if you have two different meaningful activities, then both are not that meaningful....
or am i just wrong..

i think i'm going to leave tne short answer blank.

I'm still COMPLETELY confused.

As already established..you can write on the same topic as Common App..but do we have to write it from the beginning,or just add more sentences to the already written Common App Essay?

You guys, it isn't meant to be confusing! You all are making it harder than it is. Just follow the directions.

You can choose to answer the short answer, but you don't have to.

If you do answer it, the short answer and the essay don't have to be about the same topic. They can be.

If you want to use some of the sentences you used to write the short answer in your essay, go ahead. If it really worries you so much, why not leave the short answer blank?

Good luck RD applicants. There's no need for panic or making things complicated.
