Short Answer Essays from NU

Are your short answer essays supposed to be cramped into the small space they give you or can you write more on another sheet of paper when you run out of room? Also, is it normal for your mind to go blank when you read the essay topics? Mine did. And do you start writing the essay on the application itself and then transfer over to a sheet of paper, or can you just write it al on a sheet of paper?

When writing the big essay, what are the important points to make? What should be included and what should be left out? I don’t want to ramble and write too much unnecessary stuff, but I don’t want to bypass everything by not explaining things. I’m confused as to what the school is looking for in the essay. Please help!!!

I would have the essays on a separate sheet of paper with your name and social security number (or whatever they want) at the top in a heading. I would not start the essay on the page and then continue it on a separate page, but just write "attached" on the application form and then start the essay on the separate page. It should be typed. It is not a bad idea to xerox the application and practice filling it out before you do the final copy.

In the essay, they want to get some understanding of you as a person. It is not a writing contest to see who can write the best essay. They want to get to know you and you want them to like you. Try to be interesting, and don't try to get everything about your life into the essay. Especially avoid trying to write your autobiography in 500 words or less. Above all, you want to stand out as being unique. If you write the essay on your EC's, they want to see "passion" and long-term committment to one or two areas rather than unfocused activity. Do several drafts until you get it the way you want it.

You might take a look at "Acing the College Application" by Michele Hernandez. The book is concise and relates everything you really need to know to the application form.

The application for Northwestern is a hard one.

Have you guys gotten the NU app. yet? I'm on the mailing list and haven't gotten anything.

I got mine about a week ago. The essays seem pretty tricky. I was wondering if the four short answer essays needed to be done on a separate sheet of paper. I tend to write a lot and I don't want it to get cramped and not look neat. I read the topics and my mind went blank. But I've always been into writing so Northwestern seems a good place that can challenge what I know.
