I know this is kind of broad, but what exactly is the short answer looking for? obviously not an essay since it's only 1000 characters, but how is it supposed to be structured? like just listing out facts or more writing about it? im writing about basketball.. also, is the character count including spaces and punctuation? thanks so much!!

They are looking for an answer to the question. Just like your question here. It should be structured in sentences, depending. One of Princeton’s questions is: “Two adjectives your friends would use to describe you”. I think listing two adjectives would suffice. Elaboration on that question would do more harm than good. “Your favorite book and its author”, after answering the question, one sentence on why it appeals to you might be worthwhile.

1000 characters is 1000 characters. Any key you press on the keyboard is a character.

OperaDad, do spaces count as characters? (I would think not–probably a dumb question, but I just wanted to be sure).

Yes, spaces count. If you’re not sure if your essay comes in under the character limit try previewing your application. Sometimes an essay fits in the text box but exceeds the character limit, in which case the end will be cut off in the final version.
