Shortage of chem classes

I just got an email from the dean of sas saying that gen chem is not
Goin to be on my schedule yet, due to a shortage of
Chem classes. And the department of chem will
Open up more classes for people on the wait list for chem.
Anyone else in this dilemma?

Yes I got that email too…Do you know if we are definitely going to get the class or if we might not end up with the class at all?

i honestly dont know, in the email that i got it says, the chemistry department IS…
so im guessing they will do it, im going to be applying for the special programs for medical school and i NEED to take gen chem first year.

Same chem is vital for me with med school intentions…so if they do get us a class will that change the schedule they give us Monday or will it just be added on? This doesn’t make much sense…

it will only make sense if it is added on… i will rather have an extra class than not having chem at all… After chem is added you could easily drop an elective or what ever class you want during the add/drop period.

Yes I agree, I am just concerned that the sections they create will overlap with The courses that they already signed me up for…but if they can just add it on that would be great. I hope they add it on soon though and don’t wait until the last minute

if you guys hypothetically dont get in first semster, you might as well take physics which is needed for Med school and take chem in the summer. Chem 161 is also offered in the spring i believe so you can take it then and take gen chem 2 at rutgers newark/camden/new brunswick in the summer. Or take both 1 and 2 during the summer.

If you guys are highly thinking of med school, don’t waste a year of pre-reqs.

Yes, I am taking general chem for engineers but i cant even take the lab that goes with it!

you can take the lab in the spring and its a better idea to take it in the spring. Towards the end of the lab semester, you will have labs relating to General Chemistry 2 like titrations. It would be easier to understand the material if you previously have seen it before.

You can say that you will just learn it then but before every lab you have to do a pre-lab and quiz which can be difficult epecially towards the end. The final of the class will consist of questions relating to those sections of the lab as well.

Does this problem occur every year, or is this unique to this year?

this is a first time i heard it happen to freshmen but it happens alot for upperclassmen. Not everyone will get the class they want.

Did anyone who got this email get a schedule? Mine still isn’t up. I thought I would have a schedule missing chem.

I am missing chem but they still gave me a schedule – they used a few alternates instead.

Do you know if they do add Chem to our schedule how they will manage it to fit a time slot? Will they rearrange everything or get rid of an alternate or just a brand new schedule?

Versa17 what major are you?

same here!

Also facing this problem. Got my schedule, no Chem class. They didn’t even include alternatives, so I’m only taking 3 classes …

Im really getting annoyed, i really need chem this semester, im
A premed student, i want this class, did anyone call or email the department or the dean?

As for you adding the course if it gets open, you have to make sure the time slot fits for it which means if there is a course in that slot, you have to drop it and pick a different time slot for that course.

It can be difficult because the original course can have all sections closed as well.

Only chem department gives special permission numbers and not the dean so you have to go to chem department. I believe they are in wright chemistry building on busch campus. The building is oposite of the side of SERC. There is a huge green lawn between the two buildings and they will have in big letters on the building indicating the name of it.

I doubt they will give spn’s though because since its the fall semester they usually allocate all available spaces. (The reason these courses have limited spacing is because of fire codes prohibiting the amount of students each lecture hall can exceed.) They usually tend to let some people still get in because they know people won’t attend lecture after 2-3 week in.

If you can’t get into chem, stalk webreg when you have a chance. People do drop these courses. For example, a student might be scheduled with chem but do not want to take it, you can take their spot.

The chem dept does not know which student wants to take chem or not so it can choose who not to register it for. This is why they have APA day but people change their mind as days come closer to the start of fall semester

Scienceguy – I am majoring in biological sciences.
