My major would be Mech Engg/Physics. Aid is a major concern here. Suggestions regarding removing colleges(and also adding new) are welcome. :)

Cheers!

If you're interested in Mach. Eng. do the LACs really fit? Also, any one of your safeties would look pretty safe.

If you really want to go into MechE then you should cut Dartmouth, Chicago, Bowdoin, Reed, Oberlin, Carleton, and WashU. Those schools either don't offer engineering or have bad engineering programs (when compared to their other programs).

It seems like you want the benefits of a LAC and the benefits of a research university. I was also interested in MechE/Physics when I decided on my school. Harvey Mudd would be perfect for you in providing a LAC environment with top-notch engineering/physics.

Well I am interested in either Mech or Physics major. Reed, Bowdoin, UChicago and Dartmouth impressed me with their intellectual environments, rigorous academics and aid. I think I will cut out Oberlin.

All right Oberlin out! I was also thinking of chucking out Duke due to aid reasons. Anyone in support?

I would agree with cutting Duke out because its engineering isn't the greatest.

And what about others? I dont have a problem of applying to all of them :D

But when I think of the cost of mailing the apps and sending in SAT scores. It hits me in the gut! As it is I am in India so paying that in dollars is too expensive!

Ok as of now Duke and Oberlin are out. I feel I should chuck out either MSU or FIT.

IMO it doesn't make sense to apply to all those LACs when they don't even offer engineering. If you really are even considering going into MechE, then it doesn't make sense to go somewhere that would ruin that opportunity for you. What if you go to Chicago and find out that you don't like physics and would rather major in engineering? You would be totally screwed.

Well you sure do have a point there. But I was considering the 3-2 program at Reed and Bowdoin. As far as Chicago is concerned I liked the Physics program and Physics is the only subject throughout my high school that has captured my interest.

I would love to attend HMC but the problem is aid and from what I have heard HMC is pretty stingy about International aid.

Go on the CC college forums for the colleges and ask about aid and the specific engineering you're interested in. I heard from my nephew that Washu has been pumping a lot of money into its engineering programs recently.

Ok as of now Oberlin, MSU and UChicago (kinda) out.

Among engineering schools, Georgia Tech seems notably absent. Plus, if you went to school there, in addition to being Ajay C., you'd also be reading the AJC (Atlanta Journal-Constitution)! :-)

haha Well the problem is Georgia Tech does not provide aid to Internationals.

Cut out bowdoin too.

Cut Chicago...doesn't even have engineering as a major. Also I suggest cutting Dartmouth, Brown, Bowdoin, and Carleton. You may want to consider adding Olin and Carnegie Mellon

Why do you suggest cutting down Brown and Dartmouth?

CMU does not have aid for internationals.

Well I think frutiaspice thinks that Brown and Dartmouth aren't really well known for engineering like places like MIT and Caltech. While I don't know much about Dartmouth, I have a few things to say about Brown given your intended majors. First, Brown does offer engineering and the various specializations but while studying engineering you would have the option of exploring other avenues of interest thanks to the Open Curriculum. So if you have interests outside of engineering then Brown would definitely be a good place for you to explore many subjects outside your major. In terms of physics and generally all sciences at Brown, I think the most important aspect is undergraduate focus. Due to a small graduate program, profs focus on undergrads and are generally more accepting to undergraduate research than other universities with much larger graduate programs. I think you really need to take CC's perception of a universities weakness, because the reality is at universities where certain programs are "strong" according to CC, many profs won't give undergrads the time of day.

Considering that you want to apply ED to Dartmouth it sounds to me like you are searching for that undergraduate-focused education. I would also recommend Harvey Mudd. But just to throw out an idea to you, how committed are you to engineering? Are you confident you will stick with this major for the next 4 years and beyond? This is a very important question to ask yourself when choosing a university, personally I would choose a more well-rounded university over a more specialized university but it's you that has to make the choice in the end.

Hope this helps!

Thank you for your reply.

Yes the main reason I am applying ED to Dartmouth is the focus on undergrad.

I had considered Olin but even if I get the candidate status I cant attend the candidate week. Why? 1. No money 2. Senior year exams.

This doesn't really make sense. Places like Mudd and Olin have an even greater focus on undergrad and even better engineering. Why would an international who needs aid apply ED? You aren't a good ED candidate if money is a problem.

3-2 programs suck... my older brother did one and still regrets having to transfer after his third year, causing him to miss out on all the senior year fun and graduation activities. The only ones I would look into are with Dartmouth (such as Bowdoin), which does a "2-1-1-1" system, with the third and fifth years at Dartmouth.

If you are really committed to M.E. and don't mind a larger school, Michigan is top-notch. Also, if you are looking at Ivy & equivalent schools, I think it would be foolish not to consider Cornell, rather than Brown, Duke, or even JHU, where the biomed program seems to overwhelm the other engineering disciplines. RPI or Rose-Hulman would also be a much better "safety" than say, ASU, if you like techy schools.
