I need to know if it's worth applying at MIT. I don't have much to offer other than-
ACT-27
3.7 GPA
Top 20% of my class
A's+B's in honors classes
and no AP's

EC include
NHS,StuCo,German Club,Varsity Soccer,Tech Club, Diversity Club

I have volunteered every summer for the past four years at a local summer sports camp for inner-city kids

And that's about it.

Now i know MIT is a very difficult school to get into, and I've seen how kids with perfect scores and the likes have been rejected. I am also aware that if i do have a chance, it's very very minimal. However, I'm indecisive about applying. Can someone please give me a straight answer and or advice? thanks.

Realistically your chances are not great. A qualified applicant would have a 3.9-4.0 and 32+ on the ACT and they still would not have that great of a chance since the acceptance rate is so low. From my understanding you are a slightly under-qualified applicant with no ECs that would make you stand out. Are you so under-qualified that they will flat out reject you when the see your stats? Very unlikely. Will you get accepted? Also very unlikely. As long as you are applying to schools that are more likely, there is no issue with applying, just know that you chances are not so great.

As Artsy has pointed out, your stats are low for MIT.

Most students are within the 10% of their class, usually even 5%. You’re down in the top 20%. Your ACT is very low for MIT level schools. Your GPA is okay, but not great.

With stats like that I would recommend looking at some lower ranked and less selective schools. Apply to MIT if you like, but don’t expect much.

0% chance at MIT whether you apply or don’t apply. I think it’s some high percentage, like 98%, that are in the top 10% for BOTH MIT and Berkeley. The 25th percentile for the ACT at MIT is a 32, and you are well below that as well. For Berkeley, a 27 would be the 25th percentile I believe, but your class rank still makes you have virtually no chance. Your ECs are also pretty bad. Having some random and generic clubs and activities/volunteering really won’t help you much.

May I ask why you would want to go to MIT in the first place? You don’t seem to have any indications of a serious math/science focus that most of the other applicants have. Berkeley is a little more rounded but I think you still have no chance there. You really should get a list of safer options, with some reaches that are slightly more attainable

I honestly think that you should apply because you have a higher chance of getting accepted if you do rather than if you don’t. That being said, a huge portion of applicants that are accepted, have a 36 on the math section and have a really good GPA as well. I still think that you should apply though just because there might be something in your application that they love. Good Luck!

Why do you want to apply in the first place? Veritable math whiz? Engineering/science is your life? MIT is incredibly competitive with really brilliant students who have a difficult time when they get there competing against all the other brilliant students. It’s a great school obviously but unless you are already at the top of your class in some respect, you would just set yourself up for failure.
