trying to decide if S should include ACT score in college App's or just SAT
He will be applying to UNC in state

SAT taken twice , CR 600 M 650 W 620 oct junior yr
CR 600 M 660 W 620 June, junior year
will take again in october

ACT taken june Junior yr :
Eng 30 M 26 Read 23 Sci 27 Composite 27 Combined Eng/Writing 26
writing subscore 06
probably won't retake, just not enough time...

Other info: GPA 4.4
7 AP classes
Great EC's

Did he study for the SAT retake? If so, given that he got virtually identical--and perfectly respectable--scores the second time, it seems to me that retaking again will be beating a dead horse. If he didn't study, do you have any realistic expectation that he will do so this time? Assuming that he took the PSAT, were those scores in line with his SAT?

Has he taken any SATIIs? It sounds as if he could better occupy his time studying for and taking a couple of those in October instead of retaking the SAT for a third time. He would then be prepared to submit SATIIs should he decide to apply to schools that want them. He could also concertrate on writing great essays and getting great grades. And enjoying senior year. :)

It would appear that his SATs and his ACT are pretty much right in the middle for UNC Chapel Hill. I wouldn't send the ACT because it translates as very slightly lower than his SAT. There's a chart on the College Board website that tells you how to make the comparison.

unless he won't make an EA/ED deadline (i don't even know if UNC has EA/ED), I would just wait for the SAT retake score before making a decision.

Studying now, though not as much as he shoulod. Working on the CR portion, which is what he needs. DO you know what to compare the English section of the ACT to on the SAT? I am wondering whether the English score of 30 would balance the weak CR score, or if the writing /Eng combined score of 26 would hurt it. I think we will likely just provide the SAT score. He will probably wait to take SAT II's as he has no time to study for them right now.

Since his scores so far are right in the middle, gaining another 20 points or so in CR won't change that. Is there some kind of threshold that he is trying to meet? Are UNC admissions very stats-driven, or do they look at other things? It would seem from your description that the rest of his application should be strong enough to make him a very good candidate. Does he have good AP scores to show?
