If I hope to major in Computer Engineering, should I only take science and math Subject Tests and maybe one or two humanities? Which would you recommend, and how many? I'm entering my sophomore year and haven't taken any APs or SAT IIs yet. I have my reach set on a school like Stanford or MIT.

It’s a bit early to be thinking about subject tests (most people take them junior year), but if you want to get ahead on them and score well, that’s fine. I’m a rising senior and have similar aspirations to yours, and I chose 3 (kinda 4) subject tests, and I think I’m quite content with them. I chose Math (I & II… this isn’t necessary… just take II), Physics, and US History. All of them are reasonable. You could probably self-study for Math II if you’re good at math, maybe even Physics if you’re already familiar with it, but I would wait until after an AP US History course to take the US History one.

Again, this is just the path that I took, and I found it was very reasonable and rewarding. However, feel free to choose whichever ones you want. But for MIT etc., for a major like yours, definitely do Math II and some Science. The third (/fourth) is totally up to you.

Oh, thanks! I like the mix of subjects you took. Was it all manageable junior year with your APs too?

If your teacher or AP exam preparation prepares you well, you shouldn’t need to study very much for these tests. (I studied one or two hours total for 800s on Chem/Math 2/Physics.)

do math2/physics easiest 1600 you’ll ever see.
