My transfer essay I am currently finishing does not specify what the length of the article should be but my first draft is somewhere around 1200 words. should this be severly shortend?

It should probably be shortened, though how severely is up to you. Try to look at it from the admissions officer’s perspective: they have to read countless numbers of these essays and if they reach a long one, their eyes will probably glaze over.

good point.

Adam,

I’m also having this problem. My essay used to be around 1200 words but I’ve managed to get it around 800. I’ve been through it so many times trying to figure out what I could do without, but I can’t find anything. Every part of it makes it what it is. Ideally I would like it to be around 500, but I figure that as long as the essay is well-written and not too boring, I shouldn’t sacrifice more good information.

Hopefully I’m right.
