Should all good essays be about a specific experience?

For example, instead of writing about the overall experience i had in Europe, should i write about one specific moment where something dawned on me and i changed?
instead of "in that summer, i learned this," should you say, "in that moment in front of that statue, i learned this."

can anybody give me an example of a good essay that isn't about a specific experience but with a broader scope?
