Should college application essay be persuasive?

amy ideas?

No and yes.

No: College essays should be personal. The idea is to show yourself, to be personal, detailed, honest and revealing. The idea is not to argue or try to persuade the reader to a political, intellectual or religious point of view.

Yes: the essay should help persuade the reader that you are an interesting and distinctive person who would be a positive, valuable addition to the college community. The essay should persuasively distinguish you from other applicants.

So: imo, don’t aim for persuasiveness about a particular position, argument, or point of view. Aim for persuasiveness about yourself.
