My AP Government class was debating this topic in class today and I was wondering what the board’s take on this issue was. I’m not sure if there should be certain requirements on being able to check this option, but I know as a half-asian, half-white mix, I don’t think colleges should make me identify to just one race if I’m half of both if I don’t want to check the “do not wish to specify” option.

i personally have no deep interest in having colleges *required[/] to do that, because most (if not all) of the colleges i applied to did let me check off more than one box. i'm multi-racial (indonesian, chinese, dutch, and puerto rican) so i def. enjoyed checking away, lol...

I just think if they're going to have the option of race on the applicant, they should have an option for those who don't just identify to one race.

u mean why dont they just split the question into 2?

ur dad's ethnicity
ur mom's ethnicity.
?
i dunno. they're lazy?

can't you check multiple boxes? I mean an Asian/white ethnicity will be viewed different than a native american/hispanic ethnicity (hehe i'm not trying to turn this into another AA thread at all) If you can't, I think you should, because even if they had a mixed box, it doesn't tell you anything about their ethnicity

i know exactly what to write to turn this into an AA thread, mwahaha

there's already a 7 page thread for goodness sake. It is the one controversial subject I refuse to get involved with on cc...it's like bloodshed

lol.......

No, it's not the same as the AA thread -- I don't think colleges should be giving people special treatment because of their race. I think however, if colleges are so curious about the race of their applicants, they should be politically correct and have options extending to people of mixed ethnicities.

And you may have been able to click more than two on your application, but I wasn't able to on ANY of my applications -- if they had at least done this, it would have been fine. I didn't specify my nationality on my application because I don't feel that I should have to identify my nationality on my application if they aren't going to put a spot for me to fully specify it.

then dont fill out ethnicity part it is optional

I agree with 2bad4u, I mean nobody is forcing you to put down anything, so if you don't want to, don't, if you want to, then do it.
