Should DS travel from NYC to B'more tomorrow?

DS, a rising Hopkins Junior, is planning to drive from NYC to Hopkins with DH tomorrow. He does not have to do any real move-in -- he lives in an apartment near campus, but has been home in NYC for the summer for an internship -- but he does have some stuff to move, and needs to be there for classes on Monday.

I am worried, though, about the drive down there, and DH's drive back to NYC in the afternoon, given the current weather conditions. If classes were canceled for Monday, I would urge DH and DS to put this trip off. But as of now, there has been no announcement about class cancellations.

Admissions Daniel, if you are reading this, what do you think?

Anyone else making a similar trip tomorrow?

I don’t know, it seems as if they get an early start they should be OK. My DS (alum)&his GF (rising junior) are scheduled to fly out from the West Coast to B’more on Sat as well, but they aren’t scheduled to arrive until 11:30PM! I’m hoping 1), they get there, and 2) they can get out of the airport.

I finally convinced DH and S1 to drive down tonight. They just left about 15 minutes ago. DH will stay overnight in S1’s apartment, and drive back tomorrow morning. I think that will work!

Good luck to your DS and his GF, dizzycat! Are they planning to take the train from the airport to Baltimore? That should work fine, I would think.

I hope they do have classes on Monday, after all the trouble getting there!

(Sigh) Got home from work to find out that Southwest canceled all flights to BWI arriving Sat afternoon & evening. Spent 30min on the phone trying to change GF’s flight after the SW server crashed (after we managed to change DS’s reservations online). Hoping the airport will be open Sun–GF has classes on Mon. Oh well, weather’s gorgeous here.

Oh, sigh, indeed! I hope GF can get back in time for Monday classes, or better yet, that JHU postpones classes for a day!

All updates from Johns Hopkins University about Hurricane Irene will be posted here:
[The Johns Hopkins University - Emergency Alert](http://esgwebproxy.johnshopkins.edu/notice/)

@SodiumFree: I think your son and husband made a smart decision to drive down and last night and it is smart for your husband to return home early today. I spent the last two days driving back from Florida after cutting my summer vacation short three days to make sure I could be back in Baltimore for the start of the academic semester on Monday.

Unfortunately there is no way to predict what this storm will do to campus and whether classes will be held on Monday. My guess is that it seems this morning that the storm is weakening so it comes down to a question of whether power is lost and for how long. I think by tonight we will have a real good sense of damage, flooding, and power outages … so follow the link above. I am planning that Monday Homewood will be open and operating as usual, but we are talking about Mother Nature and she is pretty unpredictable (i.e. an earthquake on the east coast).

Thanks, AdmissionsDaniel!

I got a call from DH at 7:04 this morning saying that he was on his way, so I expect he will be home in NYC before noon. S is all settled in at his apartment, and ready (more or less!) for classes on Monday, or for a little break, however things work out.

Stay safe, everyone!

DS&GF are on their way back; sounds like reasonably smooth sailing. DD (freshman) is bored–no Orientation events, nothing open. I think she’ll be relieved classes start tomorrow.

Glad Irene seems to have been less destructive than anticipated. Hope everyone is dry and safe. Here’s to the start of another academic year!
