should EC be linked with MAJOR?

guyss, i want to apply for CS major , however ECs im mostly interested in , do not have anything to do with CS, would it be better to do some CS activities or it doesn’t matter?

while applying tell them you want to major in something in which you have significant EC’s If you don’t have CS ECs but apply for CS you are hurting yourself. Even if you actually dont want to major in that subject, since you have ECs in it is smarter to choose that while applying. later do whatever you want. t

note - this applies only when the college doesn’t have separate schools for engineering where applications are reviewed separately.

@seeadmit i do lots of debates/speech clubs  but my dream is all around CS, creating program/creating site.

it’s called as strategic positioning. If you apply for CS with debates as extracurriculars then you are putting your weak side forward since other students applying for CS will have awesome extracurriculars.

If you are a sophomore in high school then it’s alright. you can always change interests. but then you have to actually create some program/website which the college will be impressed by. dont suddenly switch to CS during the senior year or at the end of junior year.

@seeadmit im taking gap year, so view my situation as im at the start of junior year

well then jump into hardcore cs, but at the same time also come up with some way about how cs and debate have a strong relation for you. how both these things are actually quite connected. come up with an explanation for that and write it in the common app essay.

@seeadmit thanks for advice, thats definetely gonna help. for example , leadership skills, communication skills and etc are most important for entrepreneurs/future CEOs and etc!

Adult (parent) here - I work in IT. We like to hire people who can communicate. Debate/speech is a great EC, regardless of intended major.

ECs should be what you enjoy doing. They don’t need to relate to your intended major. My S participated in lots of music ECs in HS. Had no plans to major in music, but continued to participate in music ECs during college.

@college_query i had skeptical views on DEBATES/SPEACH , because you know how UNSOCIAL AND WEIRD MOST of IT guys are right? im not talking about you or your employees haha, just general concept = D

ECs do not have to be linked with your major, but it can help. However, for things like business, a high school kid may not have much experience with business ECs because internships/jobs often go to college students. What top schools are looking for is dedication and passion, IMO.
