Should Georgia State worry? Kennesaw State U growing

I found a lot of this information on another site. I wanted to get some advice. I have been having doubts about transferring to GSU for sometime. I've visited campus and it just looks messy and dirty.

Right now, I'm at SPSU, but I want to transfer to a bigger more well-known university for IT management. I know Georgia State, GT and UGA are pretty good for IT management. I would go to UGA, but it's too far from home. GT seems too intense. I can't leave due to family. What do you think? Will KSU's Growth outdo GSU in the next few years? Since UGA is getting more competitive, will KSU replace Georgia State as the third best school?

Here is the original thread:
Should Georgia State worry? Kennesaw State U opens opens $21 million, 73,000-square-foot science lab - Page 2 - City-Data Forum

Last month KSU opened a $21 million dollar 73k square foot LEED certified science lab addition after it's first ever capital campaign raised $75.1 million this year(which was met 15 months ahead of schedule).

Kennesaw State University opens $21 million, 73,000-square-foot science lab addition | News at KSU

In August 2012, KSU broke ground on a $26‐million addition to its portfolio of on‐campus student housing.

Fall 2011 marked yet another enrollment milestone with 24,175 students, and 2,880 beginning freshmen(just trailing GSU). KSU led all other state universities in fall enrollment growth over the last five years, increasing by more than four thousand students or 22%.

Back in 2010, Prillaman Hall, housing the Wellstar College of Health and Human Services, opened during the
Fall of 2010.**This $56 million dollar facility added over 191,556 square feet of classroom, lab,
and office space; making it KSU’s largest building.

In November 2010, KSU students voiced support for a $100 dollar per‐semester football fee,
which would be initiated in Fall 2012 after achieving additional milestones toward launching a
football program at KSU in Fall 2014.

In Fall 2009, the Commons Dining Hall opened for business offering a wide variety of choices at
specific venues.**The new dining facility offers the students a chance to participate in special
events like dinner and a movie.

Also in 2009, KSU's addition of the Central Parking Deck in 2008 brought 2,664 new parking spaces.**The Central Parking Deck is KSU’s largest desk with 7 stories

Compared to GSU's relatively slower development with their new housing facility Peidmont North and the construction of Park Place Science center in 2010 and the buying of a new building for his admissions and housing office, KSU has really been growing faster than expected!

Although GSU is the slightly more selective school with an average GPA of 3.4 and ACT score of 23 vs KSU's 3.2 and 22 ACT score(easier to use ACT since it's only out of 36 and not 1600 and 2400), KSU's growth may very well start eating into the higher end of Georgia State's applicant pool. Georgia Southern and GCSU have been doing this for sometime, but it looks like KSU might become a good option for students who don't get into UGA or Georgia Tech. GSU has been trying very hard in the recent years to build it's campus community and lose it's community school/post-bacc reputation. KSU and the other GSU, Georgia Southern's emphasis on student life may deter applicants to Georgia State. Even though GSU is a research university, it is still placed 4th for most transfer students to UGA.

GSU is the second largest university in Georgia and one of the four USG research universities(UGA, GT, GHSU and GSU) in the state.

Are we beginning to see the addition of a fifth research university?

This really caught my eye. Apparently, UGA and Georgia Tech aren't the only big players for globalization of it's campus.

KSU is ranked 8th in the nation for masters institutions sending students to study abroad. That's topping Loyola Marymount University and College of William and Mary.

Georgia State is no where to be found. Now KSU is going to open up a permanent study abroad site in Italy.

I'm really impressed with KSU. For a school that prides itself on diversity, Georgia State hasn't done a very good job touting their diversity title.

--

Last month, BOR has approved a $38.7 million 176,000-square-foot Student Recreation and Activities Center that will triple the space of the 55,000-square-foot student recreational center built in 1967.

https://web.kennesaw.edu/news/storie...kennesaw-state

--

The biggest change GSU needs to take note of is KSU's nursing program growth. This came out in September.

"Nursing faculty at Kennesaw State University recently received a $126,000 boost from the University System of Georgia’s Board of Regents to either pursue a research doctorate or begin a research program.

One of the two nursing faculty initiative grants ($90,000) is aimed at increasing the number of nursing faculty and promoting faculty retention in the University System of Georgia, while the second ($36,000) will provide seed money for faculty research."

OP, seems to me you are possibly from the school just wanting to put out info with all your links, and first post???Really?

But the answer from me is yes, I think KSU is now better than GSU, and may within 10 years may rival UGA. I am speaking only academically, UGA will still have their traditionalists. I’m not sure if KSU has the land to grow on, do they?

hahaha there’s no way KSU can ever match University of Georgia lol

Check UGA’s collegeconfidential board there’s this thread that lists the ways UGA is growing too. The difference is UGA is growing more internationally and nationally while the smaller schools are growing regionally. Georgia Southern/KSU/GSU/SPSU students can’t even get into UGA or Georgia Tech. They’re not on the same caliber. You need a 3.83 GPA to get into UGA you need a 3.4 to go to GSU or KSU.

It’s really between KSU vs GSU from what I’ve looked up. Similar academic standards with similar students.

I copied all that from the thread i found on the other site. i wanted to get information from people who know more about colleges. I go to SPSU. You didn’t read my post obviously

I don’t think GSU has room to grow. GSU is boxed in by the highway and underground Atlanta. KSU has plenty of room to grow, but I haven’t been on KSU’s campus for that long. I went on a campus tour for GSU and I’ve visited a bunch

GSU has a 48 acre campus and KSU has a 384 acre campus, so I guess KSU doesn’t need to grow.

I read your post, but what is SPSU?

Exactly.

Southern Polytechnic State University. Some people on that other site think SPSU may merge with KSU or GSU. I don’t see that happening, but it would be nice to merge with KSU.

I LIVE off the exit that
SPSU is on, and I didn’t even recognize what your were saying. Back to your OP, I would go to KSU before GSU. No stats to back it up, just gut from living in GA for 25 years.

That’s exactly my point. Even my relatives don’t remember SPSU. “Oh you mean Georgia Southern?” “oh you mean Georgia State?”

I’ve been accepted to both for spring 2013. I know I’d have better prospects at UGA or Georgia Tech, but the time and distance commitment isn’t feasible right now. I have a pretty decent GPA too 3.68

Guess I’ll be a KSU Owl next semester! Do you know anything about KSU’s IT management/computer science program?

Sorry, no. If I hear anything about it, I’ll let you know. Good luck.

Found this too:

We see that it’s not just quantity KSU is aiming at, it’s also quality:

https://vic34.kennesaw.edu/fb/kenn_fact_book.pkg_fact_book_html.p_show_fact_book_page?p_page_type=STU&p_page_id=131&p_year=2011

But it seems KSU’s value was off for UGA’s 2001 score. They said it was 1000, it was actually 1,201. They were wrong about the 2000 score too… We might want to take exact numbers with a grain of salt…but the other numbers look correct:

http://www.usg.edu/research/documents/freshmen/ftf_sat_fall_2001.pdf

It tells us about KSU’s growth. Since 2001 in terms of SAT scores at least, Georgia Southern, GCSU, North Georgia, Augusta State and KSU have outdone GSU’s increase in selectivity. Some of these schools are already more selective than this “research” university.

hahaha even SPSU is tied with GSU. You know you’re in trouble when SPSU is tied with you in terms of 10 year growth…but I think that’s only because a lot of Tech rejects come here and then transfer later on to Tech or UGA.

Nearly a 41 point difference between KSU and GSU in 2001. Nearly a 16 point difference in 2011.

In 2001, SPSU was more selective than GSU by 31 points. In 2011 36 points(whoo…5 points…)

GSU was more selective than Georgia Southern in 2001 by 35 points…in 2011 Georgia Southern was more selective by 33 points.

GSU was also more selective than GCSU in 2001 by 8 points. In 2011 GCSU is more selective than GSU by 60 points.

GSU seems to be really going downhill even though the campus is slowly getting better. Plus living/commuting to Atlanta is expensive, loud and dirty. When I was on campus I must’ve gotten panhandled more money than I spent on the parking.

For all of you freshman applying this year be sure to make the best choice for you. I’m not saying GSU isn’t a good school, but it may not be as good as you think. I’m going to make sure my brother selects a better back up school

I have to agree with GA2012MOM here. Your post was pretty aggressive.

Georgia State isn’t on par with UGA or Georgia Tech. Everyone knows that. They won’t ever be, but that’s doesn’t mean it’s not a good school. Georgia Tech and UGA probably won’t ever become the next Berkeley and that’s perfectly ok. GSU is still a great option for Georgia students who can’t get into Tech or UGA. Why do you feel the need to point out their flaws? You’re a student at SPSU. Why lash out against Georgia State? You don’t even like SPSU from what you post.

It’s great that Kennesaw State University is making so much progress, but there is no need to belittle Georgia State. Your numbers were interesting, but there are other variables at play here. Maybe in a few years things will change, but for now there are only four public research universities in Georgia. GSU is one of them, KSU is not. Again, maybe in a few years things will be different. However, as of now, GSU is still more selective than KSU.

Your time would have been better spent writing something like this against for-profit schools such as Flagler who’s only objective is to make money. All these schools significantly benefit the state and local economy and also their students.

I’m just being honest. GSU is going downhill. The numbers prove it. If you want to put it another way GSU isn’t going uphill fast enough. Trust me I’m not out to attack GSU. I’m just putting information out there. if KSU had a forum on College Confidential then I’d post this over there. You can say whatever but facts are facts.

KSU might merge with SPSU. I think Georgia State has many areas it can improve on, but it’s still a good school. I didn’t know that GSU is now behind several Georgia schools.

[The Marietta Daily Journal - Merger possible for KSU SPSU Chancellor Huckaby doesn?t say yes or no as consolidation plans emerge](http://mdjonline.com/view/full_story/16123213/article-Merger-possible-for-KSU-SPSU--Chancellor-Huckaby-doesn’t-say-yes-or-no-as-consolidation-plans-emerge?instance=home_news_bullets)

I didn’t mean to come across as a total GSU basher, but I’m just putting some important information out there for students. Like I said, I found all this on my own. None of that info was on Collegeconfidnential. I’m just trying to help out. GSU has fallen behind over the past 10 years…students need to know. I feel like people get suckered into things these days just because they heard something good from one or two people. Facts are facts

I think a KSU-SPSU merger would be awesome. Since North Georgia merged with Gainesville State I think KSU should merge with SPSU. It’ll make SPSU a lot better lol plus the two campuses are really close. It’ll give KSU a chance to rival GA Southern for majors

Interesting. A merger would mean similar curriculum if you’re comparing GA Southern and KSU-SPSU. They would both have decent regional nursing and engineering programs. They would both have a transfer agreement with Georgia Tech. The enrollment and demographics would become more similar.

I think that would have been more worth while as opposed to the other mergers this year.

Well… This makes me question using GSU as my safety. =/

I applied to GSU as my back up school too. I was really excited about possibly living in the city but I was pretty disappointed. My sister went to GSU in the 90s and she said it’s gotten a lot better but I agree that other schools are improving faster. Schools like GA Southern and Kennesaw are drawing the better students away from GSU. GSU is unranked and the other smaller georgia schools…not UGA and Georgia Tech. are at least regionally ranked.

A lot of the students at GSU are transfer students from Morehouse or Clarke Atlanta University or GPC. GSU is more known among the black community in Georgia, but I didn’t care for them…and I’m black lol

I liked the diversity though. I also hear they have financial aid problems since the whole school is basically run by students and nobody is really an employee.

There’s also a lot of people who sit in the courtyard and smoke… it was too much for me.

hahaha it’s so true. I agree about the black community. We black people need to step it up…smh GSU has a really urban feel… I always see knuckleheads from Clark chilling there smoking and going to their parties, but the school is pretty diverse whenever I go visit.

There are a lot of old people who come back to school since it’s a commuter campus. Sadly diversity doesn’t get you a well paying job in a nice area. All of GSU’s competitors like SPSU and KSU are diverse too. GA Southern has mostly white and black people, but it’s still diversity.

Speaking of diversity last month The Anti-Defamation League (ADL) has chosen Kennesaw State University (KSU) as the first university in the country to earn its “No Place for Hate” designation.
[Anti-Defamation League Lauds Kennesaw State | News at KSU](News)

I also thought it was interesting that Kiplinger named three Georgia schools as top value public college which bases debt v tuition. UGA came in at 6th nationally and number 1 in Georgia. GT came in 31st nationally and 2nd in Georgia and actually North Georgia College and State University(soon to be University of North Georgia) came in third in Georgia and 88th nationally. Georgia State, KSU, SPSU, Georgia Southern and the rest of them weren’t even named.

<a href=“Best College Values, 2019 | Kiplinger”>Best College Values, 2019 | Kiplinger;

Georgia State has nothing to worry about.

Interesting about NGCSU(University of North Georgia in 2013) being named as a best value by Kiplinger. U North Georgia is actually a very underrated school in my opinion.

I agree MissMia. We’ve gone on countless college tours around the nation. Georgia State’s campus is heavily populated with smokers. Every time I go on to GSU’s campus, I see this cloud of smoke hanging over the common plaza right next to the library. I was actually surprised. I didn’t expect so many college kids to be so into tobacco. It’s a shame. We didn’t even see that at NYU(the artsy crowd tend to smoke more)
