I'm going to be a Dartmouth '14 and I applied there Early instead of Columbia because I disliked the core and graduate focus at Columbia. Yet, these days, everyone says that I should have applied to Columbia (I have double legacy there) b/c it is more prestigious and it will put me in a better place for a job. But to be completely honest, I don't think there would be a big difference between a Columbia degree and a Dartmouth degree would there? I want to go into business and I've heard that Dartmouth does pretty well with business placement right? But then again, Columbia might do better.....Did I make the wrong choice? Thanks.

Dartmouth does just as well as Columbia in business placement. Arguably better, in fact. He attended Dartmouth for undergrad and Columbia for an MBA.

Relax and enjoy senior year! Dartmouth is an absolutely amazing school, and I’m sure you’ll love it.

Celebrate getting into Dartmouth, and don’t look back.

You are having normal buyer’s remorse.

For what it’s worth, according to payscale.com data, Dartmouth graduates have the highest median mid-career salaries of any Ivy League school. Columbia graduates have the lowest.

Life in NYC is best experienced when you’re over 21 and have a little money in your pocket. Dartmouth is a great choice!!

Going to Dartmouth instead of Columbia isn’t going to hurt you.

A little money?

Ok, a LOT of money.

im pretty sure u will have a great time at dartmouth!

Ok thanks guys. So am I right in thinking that there is pretty much no difference between a Dartmouth and Columbia degree?

That’s ridiculous. If I had to rank the Ivies by “prestige” (which is a terrible reason to apply to a school, by the way), it’s probably Harvard, Yale/Princeton, Columbia/Dartmouth, Brown, UPenn, Cornell. What really matters most for job placement, though, is the internships you pursue and the connections you make with potential employers during college. You can go to Harvard and fail to have a job; you can go to Washington University and get a great job out of college. So don’t worry.

As far as the legacy status, perhaps you would have had a better shot at Columbia since you’re a double-legacy, but it’s irrelevant since you got into Dartmouth early decision! And for all we know, you could’ve chosen to apply to Columbia and (like tons of amazing candidates, just look at the Columbia ED Decisions thread) been deferred or even denied! Finally, if you don’t like the Core, you probably would not be happy at Columbia. You spend nearly half your college career in Core classes, so loving the Core is almost a prerequisite for loving Columbia. Don’t worry, Dartmouth is an amazing school and a very tough one to get into. I have a few friends who got in and many who were deferred. You were a competitive candidate and the school has confidence you’ll be successful. You should be happy, not regretful.

Columbia’s prestige is cyclical, based partly on the (financial) welfare of NYC.

In the late sixties thru the eighties, Columbia was seen as no better than Cornell.

That said, it is currently slightly more prestigious than Dartmouth. But the negligible difference in prestige is not a very compelling reason to regret your decision or transfer or anything.

great. thanks guys!
