Should I accept Swarthmore's waiting list offer?

I got waitlisted to Swarthmore but i was wondering if its worth it. I have been accepted to UCB and UCLA so i have really been considering them. How does Swarthmore compare to UCB and UCLA in academics and socially? Which has a higher percentage of students being admitted to top 14 law schools? How strong is their philosophy and poli sci departments compared to them?

I would except it. It can’t hurt. I would still go to Cal though, unless Swarth gave a better financial package.

accept*

I agree. You have nothing to lose, so why not?

Swarthmore is a small LAC and Cal is a huuuuuuge university. You have nothing to lose though right?

Swarthmore is on a whole different level than the UC schools. 56 percent of the students accepted are in the top 2 percent of their class. 37 percent are the valedictorians or salutatorians of their class. It has a reputation for being fiercely intellectual. It is small, intense, serious. Is that the kind of atmosphere you’re looking for? If so, you have nothing to lose by staying on the list.

It doesn’t really matter. It doesn’t cost you anything to stay on the waitlist, although the odds of being accepted of the waitlist are miniscule.

The main thing to do right now is to focus on the great options you have in hand and what a great time you are going to have in college next fall. If you get a surprise call from Swarthmore, worry about it then.

I live near swathmore. It is a lovely school. But I dont think its worth the money for a poly psi major. Go to Berkley and save your money for Law school. I dont think it matters where you go, just get the great grades and do well on the LSATS. Besides if you are from Cali you will not like the small town or the winters.

I know it’s not Oakland, but Philadelphia isn’t really a “small town”. It’s an urban area of about 5 million people. Sheesh.

You don’t know what “the money” is until an accepted student has their financial aid package in hand.

The average Swarthmore student paid $32,000 total inc. room, board, and all fees last year. That compares to the current $24,000 sticker price for in-state at UC-Berkeley. Many Swarthmore students pay less than they would pay in-state at a California UC university, which is not a bad deal considering that Swarthmore spent an average of $81,000 for each undergrad last year and has an average class size of 15 students.

Swat would be a great college experience and very different from the UCs. Smsll classes, lots of resources for very few students, you’ll know your profs and all of your classmates.

Swarthmore is not in Philadelphia. It’s in Swarthmore, which is a small town (pop. about 6K) about 15 miles from the city of Philadelphia. Sheesh.

Thanks. I am familar with Swarthmore’s inside the beltway (“Blue Route”) location in major urban area. 25 minutes to downtown from the train station on campus. About the same elapsed time for the 7 mile drive to the airport.
