Should I Admit My Race?

“I am part of a “biracial” family, and I think it is SILLY to consider humankind to be divided up into “races,” all of which are arbitrarily defined and differently defined in different parts of the world. So some people who think like me, who want to emphasize their commonality with the rest of humankind, don’t answer those questions as a matter of principle.”

Finally someone who realizes that race is indeed artificial.

“Again, colleges can figure out this information whether you check the box or not from your school’s report.”

How? The school report on the common app makes no mention of race nor does my transcript.

That Harvard indicates that 15 percent of its enrolled students are of unknown ethnicity shows that colleges CAN’T, or at least won’t, always figure out an ethnic category for every applicant. Indicate what you can indicate in good conscience, or don’t indicate at all if you wish.

Good luck to all of you in your applications. Most likely, your ethnicity will NOT be the deal-breaker or deal-maker compared to everything else that you submit with your application.

Yes, I think you should submit your race. Everybody in the US tend to think that they’re the best and only race. These people are closed to the world around them, and don’t know about the history or geography of other countries. I am from Colombia, and everybody there discriminates me and asks me ignorant questions like: do you live in trees? Are you a drug seller? Is you country in Africa? I think that you should submit your race and BE PROUD OF IT.

bieng a good white candidate won’t preclude you from bieng accepted to your school of choice. Be real with yourself and check what applies.
