NEW INFORMATION: MY FATHER HAD A HEART ATTACK IN 2010 AND HAS DIABETES, MY MOM HAD TB A FEW YEARS AGO AND SHE HAS A LUNG INFILTRATE PROBLEM THAT CAUSES HER CHEST PROBLEMS= I had to stop several of my ECs and start taking care of my younger brother--feed, take care, etc,

my family housed 2 families from our relatives for three years= i mentored, took care of, and fed their kids (4 in total) starting at the age of 13 and I essentially had to give up a lot of my EC's to do so.

Also, I didn't initially put in Chorus, Big Buddies, 5K's, head tutor, or my AP Scholar with Honor on my application because it told me that the spots for my ECs/awards were filled.

In addition, my earlier GPA was 4.36, now it is 4.41.

Also, I was going to do a sister city (summer transfer) program with Mito, Japan, but it was cancelled because of their 2012 earthquake.

Furthermore, I introduced several new holidays to the International Club at my school and initiated an International Film Festival with Film Club.

I could not do any ASB, Class Committee or YLA type EC's because of my family's financial conditions and health problems.

I didn't include these things in my application because I didn't want to seem like I was begging for attention, but since I was rejected, I think they have a right to know everything...

Do it! The worst they could say is no :)

do you know what they mean when they say “despite your challenges, how have you persevered, how are you different”? That’s what you should have shown on your app.

Yes, I wrote about that for my general personal statement, but I focused on how I worked really hard in the extracurricular activities I had and made up for the ones I couldn’t afford–like ASB or Senate.

Again, I didn’t mention my parents’ health issues because I didn’t want to sound like I was begging. But now I wonder if that was the best decision to make.

Bump, please, can I get a few more replies? I need some guided advice.

bumppppp please help guys

bummmmmpppppppppppp

Your mistake was not laying all your cards on the table in your original application. I understand that you might not want to share such personal information in your application, but now UCLA has given out all its spots and even with this new information, it might not be compelling enough to approve your appeal.

You might as well try it, but you should assume they’ll say no and start making plans for attending another school. If they approve it, then you can make a decision to go to UCLA, but if not, at least you have already moved on and made other plans.

I understand, and I recognize my mistake. You’re right, and I have been making plans for other schools that I have been accepted into. But I don’t think it will hurt to appeal. What’s the worst they can do? RE-reject me? Now that I’ve let this simmer for a few days, I know what I want to do. Thanks for everyone’s feedback, and if anyone else wants to give me some input, that would be great as well.
