Should I appeal?

Decisions are out and I was rejected. Many of my classmates whose gpa and SAT that are lower and mine were accepted.
My gpa is 4.05 unweighted and 3.8 uc gpa.
My SAT is 2150 and SAT 2 Math 2 800 and Chemistry 710.
I was first chair violinist for the Boyle Heights Youth Symphony and I'm a Public Relations Officer in FNL Club.
I have over 200 hours of community service. 100 from volunteering at the library which gave me an award for my service and another 100 for working as a research analyst at the LA County Department of Public Health.
I am also rank 27 in my class of 599.

I called the admission office and asked which part of my application was weak but the lady replied the school looked over all aspects of my application and she cannot give any specifics to it. She also said I may appeal but there's a good chance I won't have my decision reversed. Most of what she said to me was standard and whenever I asked anything specific, she told me to look at their site, which I've looked over numerous times. I just need some opinions about whether my appeal is worth a try or not.

if it makes you feel better and won’t take up too much of your time, go for it. (obviously, it’s easy for everyone here to say that.)

it’ll be hard to compare to previous years’ tactics if they’re still using their new holistic reviewing system to review the appeals as well.

no offense, but you need new and compelling information to appeal.

i spoke to a guy who was working in the admissions, and he said that they get so many appeals of people begging to be accepted, and most of them do not have anything to justify an appeal.
sure, your stats are high, but they already made their decision. im afraid your just wasting your time and theirs by submitting an appeal. there really doesnt seem to be a basis for what your doing

Your UC GPA is low.
UC GPA is the most important.
With your UC GPA 3.8 you can go to UCI, UCSC, UCR, UCM
So appeal to any of those.
Many students with UC GPA of 4.0 have problem to UCD or UCSB.

i got in to ucsd with a gpa of 4.04 and a sat score of 1780
but ucsd doesnt credit sat score the most .

i honestly believe it is the essay that might have not made u appealing to them. :[
i think i got in with my essay…

as for the appeal, if this is ur #1 school you want to get in then fight for it! they’ll give up to persistant people :D

i agree… Appeal… dont give up so early… but remember you wont get in 100%… so don’t feel like a waste afterwards or anything :)

try to make this the best thing you have ever written… i dont know the deadline, but work on this extremely hard and include new things about you… my english teacher told me before i started to craft my essay is to go on the computer, pull up word, and then shut the monitor. Then start typing whatever you feel like typing, just type type type until 15 mins or so have passed… then scan through it and pick out the “stars” and things like that and then decide on what you want to write the appeal letter about.

be crafty and nifty…

Also, I mistakenly wrote unweighted gpa instead of weighted gpa. I’m sorry for the confusion.

Thanks for all the encouragement. I received my acceptance today. Thank you for persuading me to appeal.

This isn’t always true, I got in with a 3.6

GPA isn’t always the cause for a rejection, but then again no one really knows how the holistic approach affected admissions.

Congratulations!
Further evidence that you should never give up.

hi! I am another student trying to appeal for UCSD, and I was wondering if you know when they would release their decision. I know that they say at least three weeks, but have you been able to contact them? I wanted to ask how much students are ahead of me on the list of appeal so I know if I should wait or just send in my appeal immediately. Personally, I have tried calling them but I wasn’t able to connect to only the admission office for some odd reasons. I was wondering if you had any luck with that.
Good luck with your appeal and hope we’ll see each other @ UCSD!

edit: wow I am bad at reading haha…
so hm neglect what I said before, and tell me ask you this:
do you know how long it took UCSD to reply ?

I realize this is pretty old, but for a student in roughly the top 5% of his class of 599 to be rejected from UCSD is something rather strange. An appeal was definitely the right decision, whether OP got in or not.

Congrats on getting in, though. You should have been accepted before you had to write your appeal.

@zetandal
I don’t think they notice class rank unless you get ELC, which is top 4% (along with certain requirements)

@Zetandal: I know someone with ELC who was rejected. Okay test scores, amazing ECs.
