Should I apply as a transfer?

I took community college classes during high school, and graduated high school with over 60 cc units (my cc GPA was 3.698, though my overall high school GPA was obviously higher as I was always only part-time at the community college).

At any rate, I'm taking a gap year and was planning on taking 1-2 classes at the cc next semester (I'm not taking any this semester). Most private schools will still let me apply as a freshman as I'll only be part-time, but I read on the UC (and CSU) websites that you cannot apply as a freshman if you're enrolled in a college after hs graduation.

My main concern is that I won't get into UCs as a transfer (I'm mainly looking at Berkeley, UCLA, and UCSB). Like I said, I had a 3.698 GPA at the community college (I started taking courses there as a freshman in high school), and I'm going to apply to UCs as an English major. I didn't take a math course at the community college, though I could take that next semester. I also didn't take science courses (though from what I read you only need units in two of the following: arts/humanities, social sciences, or biological sciences, and I have the first two). I'm also somewhat concerned about how late transfer decisions are released, as freshman deposits for other schools are due on May 1 and UC decisions for transfers apparently don't come out until late April.

My only other option would be to not take classes at the community college next semester (as I could still apply as a freshman if I didn't), though I was really looking forward to it so I'm not sure if I want to nix that idea yet.

If anyone familiar with the UC transfer process could give me any advice, I would really appreciate it. :) Thanks!

You would get into UCSB. What’s our major?

English (10 char)

I think you need to investigate your situation with Math a little more fully before making a decision to apply now for Fall 2011 admission as a transfer rather than a freshman. I am pretty sure that even an English major has to complete some kind of a college level math class at their CCC to be eligible to transfer to a UC or CSU. Furthermore, the math class might have to have been completed by the end of this semester since this semester’s grades are the last ones that the UCs you plan to apply to will see before they make their admissions decisions. With some courses it is acceptable to say that you plan to take them in the Spring of the year you plan to transfer but for required English and Math courses I think you have to complete them by the end of the Fall semester before you transfer so that the admissions departments can be certain you have successfully completed these basic prerequisites before they make a decision to admit you.
