Should I apply EA to Tulane if my test scores aren't the best at this moment?

December is the last chance for me to take the SAT again. I did pretty bad on the SAT but I am very motivated to do much better on the December SAT. Should I still apply EA or wait for RD?

If it helps I plan to apply as a computer engineering major or computer science as a female. I am a legacy student (parent went there)

Have you considered trying the ACT exam? Some find their scores are higher on that exam. Your chances will be lower on the RD round. If you are awaiting new scores, just let your admissions rep know.

This might be a situation where you want to reach out to your regional admissions counselor for some advice. Last Spring, RD took admitted very few people relative to EA, ED 1 and ED 2. Applying ED is also an option as it shows demonstrated interest and they are more forgiving on test scores in some circumstances.

How bad is your SAT? Is there an opportunity to take the ACT?
Are there other parts of your application that are stronger, like your GPA? The application is a holistic view so your SAT score may not automatically sink you.

Agree with @AH1310

Depending on what your current score is, you might be competitive for ED/legacy right now but not so much for EA. Interest cannot be demonstrated more strongly than applying ED.

Also, I’m wondering about whether ED2 is really gone at Tulane. While you can’t apply initially as ED2 any more, I wonder if Tulane is still going to offer an ED upgrade option to EA defers in December/January.

@northwesty – ED2 is the big mystery (along with what merit will be offered). Either Tulane knows they ARE going to have ED2, but is not publishing it because they want to maximize ED 1; or they are going to wait for the data to come to see what kind of class they can fill; or they’ve decided to abandon it based on the strength of last year’s EA and ED1 showing. This does put applicants in a difficult situation, but I undertstand from Tulane’s standpoint why they are doing it.

You also don’t want to lose your legacy bump by waiting for RD

I haven’t seen a whole lot of discussion on the boards about how Tulane handles legacies.

I assume it is a positive, but don’t know how much. Also don’t know if Tulane requires legacies to apply early to get the tip. Some schools do that, some don’t.

Since ED is so new at Tulane, it is fair to ask your admissions rep about how legacy works in the context of ED/EA/RD.

@AH1310 @DebmomNY My SAT score is 1250… extremely terrible. I plan to take the ACT and SAT in December. My GPA is quite high (at least for me), 4.55 . ECs are pretty good, I won a few awards, I’m working on a tech/programming internship, I’m the president of 2 clubs. Planning on writing a paper. @northwesty the issue is, Tulane is not my #1 choice, it’s more like my #2-#4 choice.

I would definitely reach out to your admissions counselor and ask when you should apply. They might reject you from EA because of your score, but RD admits a very small number of people. If you are not applying ED, just understand that the Tulane is not easy to get into even for high stats kids, so your overall chances are on the low side at this point. Just curious, what are the other schools you are thinking of?

@AH1310 I decided on applying RD. I don’t want to risk getting rejected and regretting doing EA.
It really depends on how I do on the SAT. I’m applying to pretty good schools in my area that don’t have very high SAT score averages. If I get at least a 1470 on the December SAT or get a 33 ACT, I’m going to apply to more private schools. I know my scores are really really low and I feel so terrible about them. But I’m trying my best to get them up
