2 of my aunts went there and 1 of my uncles. ( I was also going to ask my aunt to write me a reccomendation letter for the college as she is an alumni).
Visited Campus (Information Session/Tour)
Attended BU Reception
I live in NJ
My stats are low but I know I have the capability to do well. Do you guys think I should ED II . It would still be a reach for me but 1 in 2000 gives me more of a chance than 1 in 55000 . Please help me. Any advice on any colleges I should apply to. Thank you so much!
i know but would they not give me need based money? i have an older already in college and my dad has lost his job … like my brother goes to villanova and he was paying 60k last year and they cut his tuition down all the way to 18k this year… plus when i go to college it will have to be even lower.
BU is not a school that meets need. They don’t promise or guarantee to cover need for accepted students. Instead, they have an evaluation system for accepted students, where they review their financial info against their competitiveness as an applicant (ie: how badly does BU want you to attend) and they dole out financial aid/grants/scholarships accordingly. It’s a system that benefits many, but lower stat, lower income kids are not best served by it. It works best for high stat/low income or high stat/middle income students, from what I’ve seen. (ie: high stat/low income kids who get full rides and can attend, and high stat/middle income kids who get decent offers and their families can afford to cover the difference)
Honestly I think your stats are too low to be competitive, and you won’t get aid. I could only see that changing if a) your SAT pulled WAY up (200-300 points) b) you have a really compelling reason for the lower GPA with a strong upward trend and increasing course rigor in recent years and c) an amazing essay. I went to an admissions session recently as an alumni and they showed us profiles of three applicants (based on real kids). One was admitted with a 3.2, 1800-range SAT, and a very good essay… but the catch with her is she was a URM whose single mother battled cancer her freshman year, leading to a dip in her grades… which then recovered beautifully, in advanced and AP courses, over the next three years after her mother recovered. She talked about coming from poverty in her essay. Basically, extreme outlier. Just to give you context.
wow this is crushing, i was high middle class last year my life just turned around last december when my dad lost his job before that my house income was well over 150k . i don’t really know what to do as of now. Would it really not help me if my aunt, who is an alumni, wrote me a letter of rec. Tbh entering into high school freshman year was an odd battle for me. My grandfather was suffering from cancer which is primarily the reason my grades dropped and when he passed away I was really finished. I did not want to include this in my application because first it is very difficult for me to talk about and second I do not want admissions to think I am trying to gain sympathy. I still do have an upward trend in high school and I never stopped challenging myself. I have 9 Honors classes and 3 AP ( we arent offered AP till junior year and our choices are limited). I fell in love with BU when I visited. I have a question if I get accepted early decision and am not able to afford the price they give me what would happen?
And personally I would not want to go to BU if I got into CGS because it is just like you are going to community college for 2 years for a much higher price range and then transferring into Boston university your junior year … & I’ve heard CGS is more discussion based classes like high school which do not really aid to you’re major IMO … at that point I rather go to my state school; Rutgers…
Wellll CGS is not community college. Not at all. The quality of the programs is light years ahead of any CC. It’s more akin to going to a (pretty good) state school then transferring, which is guaranteed–in the end, you get a BU degree, not a CGS degree, so it all ends up the same in the end. That said, I WOULD NOT go into massive debt for BU (I give that advice to anyone–I love my alma mater, but my debt was minimal). You can apply and see what happens. The only way to get out of ED is if you absolutely 100% cannot afford it. I’m not sure how that process works, but I do know finances is the only loophole.
Yes I know it would be more rigorous than community college I just think it be btr to go to a state school where I can start pursuing my major freshman year rather than junior year. I really want this utilities to be equipped for my career and I know BU can do that for me! But your absolutely right. I do not want to go in with a large scale debt on my head. What do you advise I do? Should I talk to the financial aid office before applying Early Decision and see what they have to say?
@Aash11 Rutgers is a very good state school. Have you visited or researched? Did you apply EA or regular? EA is rumored to be coming out next week. Honestly, Rutgers is very score focused I think your scores are low for most Rutgers schools (I don’t know your intended major) but possibly you could get into SAS. I noticed in your OP you didn’t list any math courses? Whst is your major? Have you considered test optional schools? Also, is the 3.2 weighted or unweighted?
Well I’ve gotten accepted to the Newark campus I’m still waiting on new bruinswicks campus & unweighted is 3.2 but I’ve heard rutgers has their own way of calculating GPA. && I have taken math courses but I’ve never taken an honors math course. I jst listed all the honors/ap courses I have taken.
@Aash11 congrats on Newark, what program? Whst Rutgers school did you apply to, not campus, but like SAS, Nursing? Business, Engineering? That will make a difference. What is your major?
Back to your original question, unless your Dec score comes up quite a bit, I wouldn’t apply ED 2 if it was me. Have you looked at Temple? They are also test optional.
Thank you! And I applied as a business major. Well i applied Rutgers Newark business Rutger NB business and Rutgers NB SAS . I have looked at Temple but the programs aren’t really looking that great to me. Do you know of any good programs there? I’m applying to Drexel though the 5 year 3 co-op option looks amazing ! And what would you consider my score going up quite a bit? Like 150 -200 points?
