Should I Apply for a FAFSA Pin?

Hello,

I am in the high school class of 2008, and I just finished applying for a scholarship program that required me to fill out the 2007-2008 FAFSA form. On the application, they stated not to request for a PIN, but I was wondering what the repercussions were if I did sign up for one.

Can I sign up for a pin for the 2007-2008 form, and still use the same pin next January for the 2008-09 form?

Yes, once you have a PIN you need to be careful to NOT lose it. You will use it for as long as you need to do finaid "stuff" with the federal government (FAFSA, Stafford Loan stuff, etc). Remember also, that your parents need a PIN to sign the FAFSA electronically as well. I guess my question is...how can you submit the 2007-08 FAFSA without a PIN? Seems to me that you can't.

I would suggest contacting someone at the scholarship program because there are only two ways of submiting a FAFSA: signing with your PIN number or mailing a paper signature page. Without doing one or the other, the Department of Education will not process your FAFSA. I can't understand why they would say to not request a PIN...it just doesn't make any sense.
