Should i apply for the same major for all schools or different for every school?

I currently have a 3.42(uw) gpa and 3.73(w). I also got a 1430 on the SAT (I’m taking it again in september). These are the best scores but I really want to major in computer engineering. I am also really interested in Business. I was thinking in really competitive schools I should apply for business and in less competitive schools I should apply for computer engineering. Is this a bad idea? I live in California so are the any school recomendations?

they aren’t the best scores
I forgot to say before but my UC Gpa is a 4.73. My regular weighted gpa is 4.86

At some universities you are admitted to the program you applied to and cannot switch to a different major until the end lof freshman year. And then the transfer is competitive.

“I currently have a 3.42(uw) gpa and 3.73(w).”
“My regular weighted gpa is 4.86”

I do not know how to compare these two statements. If your unweighted GPA is 3.42, then either you got a C at some point or your B’s outnumber your A’s. I understand that different schools compute weighted GPA very differently, but I do not understand if your B’s outnumber your A’s how you ended up with a weighted GPA of 4.86.

I am missing something. Your login name fits me right now!

If I apply for computer engineering, I am not looking to change my major. And if I apply for business I am also not looking to change my major

I am so sorry I accidentally typed in a 4 instead of a 3. My UC weighted gpa is a 3.73 and my regular weighted is 3.86

Computer Engineering will be a competitive major so I would apply widely since all the UC’s and Cal states admit by major for Engineering.

With a UC Capped weighted GPA of 3.73, I would target UC Merced, UC Riverside and UC Santa Cruz for the California UC’s. For the CSU’s, SDSU, CSU Long Beach, Cal Poly Pomona, San Jose and Fullerton would be good options.

What is your college budget? Do you want to stay in California or are you considering OOS schools? Arizona State might be option along with some the WUE schools found on this link:

In General, it is much easier to switch out of an Engineering major than to switch into, so if you are leaning towards CPE, then apply for that major.

There is nothing in wrong in applying to CPE or Business at different schools, just make sure you research how difficult it is to change majors later on.

Advantage with private schools is that most do not require you declare a major until end of Sophomore year so if your budget allows you might want to pursue some private schools instead. University of Redlands, University of La Verne, Chapman University might be options for Business.

First step back a bit. Look at some schools that fit your profile with your stats. Look up the CDS for each school IE for Michigan https://obp.umich.edu/campus-statistics/common-data-set/

Each schools program will be slightly different also. You can do business stuff on many campuses. Some you can get minors also. Lots of business schools might have a computer science subset.

See that schools have options that make sense to you. You don’t need a business degree to go into business. Lots of CEOs come out of the Stem world. Hopefully this makes sense

Go ahead and apply to business at some schools and engineering at others. There’s a lot of growth and maturing that happens in 12th grade. Your interests will change and become clearer between the time when applications are due and when you have to choose where to go. It would be good to have options next spring.
