Should I apply for the SDSU Weber Honors Scholarship?

The application is due on January 22nd, which include three 500 word essays. I have finals that week and I was wondering if it was worth focusing on? How much money would I receive even if I got accepted? Should I apply for other scholarships instead when I have more time, and that may not need so much work to be done?

I know the wording of the last sentence is weird, sorry, I just finished writing all the essays for the Webers Honors program and I’m half dead.

We encouraged our children to apply for university-specific and department-specific scholarships because we felt they had a better chance of being selected for one since they were competing against a smaller pool of applicants than with non-university scholarships. You will need to contact the HC directly for information about scholarship amounts. I don’t know if they will tell you though. My Aztec didn’t learn how much the scholarship was worth until after they were notified they had been selected.

Where do you find the Weber Honors College Scholarship Application? My daughter applied to the Weber Honor College last week but never received information about the scholarship application.

Thanks @Gumbymom. There is a dedicated link in the e-mail that my D overlooked and I never saw. Glad I saw this thread otherwise I would not know about it. Now she only has a few days to do these essays. Argh. She needs the scholarships bc she is OOS and it all helps. Are you familiar with SDSU? Is it more than just a party school? Its her back-up CA school, her top choices are USC and UC schools.

My attitude about “party schools” is that any school can be a party school if you make the effort to look for the parties. Greek life is prevalent on campus which feeds in the “party school” stereotype. I think SDSU has an active social vibe, put there are just as many non-partiers and partiers. The Aztec parents association puts on “good clean fun” events for the students throughout the year, so students have a lot of choices. The school athletics also lends itself to a vibrant school spirit. My younger son is a 2nd year and really loves the school for the social and academic benefits. If she hasn’t visited, it would be worth hers and your time to get a feel for the school. As long as my son is happy attending and doing well, it is all that I could ask for in a school.

This is very helpful. I agree about the party school thing. We’re planning to visit SDSU on 3/19. Are you in-state? I’m likely going to have a job relocation in May so I would be moving to CA permanently for my job so that’s why my daughter is considering CA schools. I would love to learn more about you son’s decision to attend SDSU over the UC schools and some of the privates there. Happy to message if that’s a thing on the board? Newbie here!

Hey guys, I’m happy you found some good information from each other, but do you have an answer to my original question? @mom2one98 @Gumbymom

@GhaneeLudin To follow up on my previous response, for many of their scholarships, SDSU does not share the amount of the scholarship prior to awarding it. Many times, unless stated specifically, the amount is decided by the scholarship committee when they make their decision. Your best bet to find out more would be to contact someone in the Honors College office. I don’t know if they would be able to give you much information, but they have always been very helpful when my Aztec has contacted them.

I don’t know if anyone can tell you if it is worth it for you to apply for the HC scholarships, especially since you have finals this week. The main question I would ask my children in such a case would be if they really had the time to write application essays as well as study for exams. Maintaining their grades was their top priority.

@mom2one98. We are in-state California and both son’s opted to remain in-state. Younger son is the SDSU student. He only applied to UC’s and Cal States two years ago but older son did apply to a few privates three years ago. We are full pay so FA and merit aid did not play into any decisions for their college choices. You are welcome to PM me about any questions and hopefully I can answer.

@GhaneeLudin: Sorry for sidetracking your thread. As @Fish125 stated, the scholarship amounts are not known before hand and if you feel it is worth the effort, I would apply.
