I have a 3.7 unweighted GPA and 27 on my act. Would it be worth it to apply to University of Michigan? I also am the cross country captain, earned my track letter three years in a row, have been in band for three years, taking 4 AP classes, and I am taking a 200 level German class at Eastern Michigan University my senior year. Would this make up for my average GPA and score?

That is the minimum GPA and ACT scores the GCs at our high school recommend for applying to UofM (and I’m assuming you are in-state) so I would apply. No telling how, with holistic admissions, the admissions reps will read everything. If you look at the common data set, people are admitted “like you” statistically but I also know equal numbers of kids who were not admitted with similar profiles. You would not be “wasting” your application fees to apply. You can also ask your guidance counselor who would be familiar with how students FROM YOUR HIGH SCHOOL fair in admissions. My kids go to a high school ranked in the top 10 and UofM NEVER takes every one of the kids that apply regardless of their stats.

Okay thank you so much! That really helped me.

Certainly worth a try as getting accepted is not a science. My son had a 3.6 UW/31 ACT and my daughter a 3.7 UW/29 ACT did not get in out of high school (both with a bunch of extra curricular and tons of AP classes). However their suburban Detroit High School only gets about 10 kids into Michigan each year. With realistic expectation you will be fine. Spend a ton of time creating compelling essays.

Alright thank you so much, the essays are really what I need to work on. I’ve been taking classes and working with teachers for them.

Go ahead and apply. UM is a reach right now, but if you can, retake the ACT. Apply EA and write excellent essays.
