Should I Apply Or Not?

Here is my dilemma...I've added Cornell and University of Indiana (Bloomington) to my list of schools...I still have yet to start most of my applications (most are common app), but I am going to rewrite my common app essay because I feel its too impersonal.

Should I send the essay I already have to my safety school (Fordham University) to get that application over with, and spend my time on the new common app essay or wait until I finish the essay and use that for Fordham University?

Also, I was considering adding University of Chicago (Economics), but the application is extensive and its really a factor of "is it really worth it?" My stats are less than stellar, but from what I hear..UChicago doesn't weigh SAT's too highly, but rather the overall application, specifically the essays (which are rigorous). I have ~a week to do the common app schools, Cornell's app, and the supplements. Should I bother applying to UChicago? I don't know much about it, other than it has a great economics program and the campus is nice. But I've also heard that the social life isn't too great because most are introverted (don't know how true this is - told by a current student).

I'm trying to weigh the marginal cost/benefits of applying to UChicago and even Cornell. I need to make it final because I need to tell my teachers (who are on vacation right now) to send out my recommendation letters for those schools. I don't want them doing more work than they have to.

Thanks

Do the best job you can with EVERY school, even your safety. There are too many stories of people who didn't get into their supposed safety schools because they didn't put the same time and effort into every application.

Regarding the U of Chicago - it's a terrific school, on par with any of the Ivy's in terms of the education you'd receive there. However, reports of it being "the school where fun goes to die" are vastly over-rated according to students who actually go there. If you are looking for a stimulating intellectual environment, students who do take learning seriously, a great city environment, and interesting, involved students, U Chicago would be a good fit.

If you've added IU-Bloomington to your list, get that one in ASAP. The online app is quick and easy, no essay. They're a rolling admissions school so the earlier you apply, the better.

If you have a week to tackle any of the uber apps (ie. Chicago, Amherst, Stanford)... Cornell is common app + a supplement, which is an easy tack on, but if you haven't finish the common app, then I would stick with Cornelll and leave the Uncommon App of Chicago alone.

Keep Cornell, UofChicgao can rest till you finish the rest, but I'd rather you make sure you produce a quality personal statement and revise it before answering questions about your favorite painter or writing a 2 page responses to Zen Buddhist proverbs (mind that does not stick!) for the UofChicago app. You don't have the time to do bot of them at your best unless you are beyond even the CCer workaholic abilities.

Thanks everyone...yeah I decided to not go with UChicago until I've finished the rest.

GoBlueAlumMom: I submitted the IUB application, but it says I need to print out the Counsellor form and have them sign it and send my transcript, but my school is on vacation. How am I going to get this sent in on time?

IU just requires a counselor's rec, I believe. You can submit the IU app online now, finish up your common app, and get those transcripts/recs going as soon as you get back to school. If I recall from a previous post, you just missed the Kelley D.A. cut-off. IU will be a safety with your stats so you shouldn't have a problem.

Thanks Blue...I edited my post because I checked the requirements - I guess I'll wait until I get back to school. I just submitted the application.
