Should I apply or would I not stand a chance?

I lived in France from age 7-16, so my 9th and 10th year grades don’t have Honors or APs since those don’t exist in France. Therefore my GPA isn’t high when it is cumulative (2.9) but if you look at my Junior year of HS it is 4.1. And my senior grades are looking the same so far.

I took 2 AP exams last year: Psychology and French, and got 5 on both.
I am taking AP European History this year and ALL Honors classes. (And i’ll be taking the AP European History AP Test)

My counselor statement explains my lower GPA and grade situation for 9th and 10th grade.

SAT:
Critical Reading: 660
Writing: 720
Math: 520

Subject test:
Literature: 640
French Language: 800

I’m the photographer and web designer of my school newspaper, I babysit and do french tutoring, I do community work for the Salvation Army and Habitat for Humanity, but have only done so since about a month. I play the piano and do portrait photography. I’ve been in clubs such as FBLA and the French Club and have also been a lead actress in drama class.

The essays I have been writing have info about my living in France (diversity), the culture and traveling experiences I had (I traveled throughout Europe a lot).

I want to major in French or Psychology.

Any opinion?

u have a great chance, relax.

Really? I’m hoping it could maybe be one of my safety schools?

Nina – You certainly stand a good chance with admission to American University, but it is not a safety school for you academically. You haven’t mentioned financial need but if there is any that would be one more reason why American shouldn’t be considered a safety. Your safety should be a school which you and your parents can afford and one that you are almost certainly going to be admitted to. Good luck!

If American University accepts me, my parents will most likely pay for my tuition the first couple of years. (i’ve been saving money as well). I guess i’m less concerned about tuition than I am about simply being accepted.

you have a pretty good chance, but i wouldn’t say it’s a safety at this point. I’d say its a pretty good match school. If your boards were closer to 2000 i’d say then it could be considered a safety. Again I really don’t know about regular decision but I know alot of people accepted with SAT’s in the 1800’s. Make sure you show some interest; They love that.

Thanks for the opinion, how can I show my interest though? I don’t think I have the time or ability to go visit their campus right now?

You show interest by writing letters to your admissions rep and asking questions about the school. However, make them real questions - things you really want to know. If you can’t visit, how about doing their online chats? If AU comes to your school for a college fair visit their table. If they are offering interviews in your area, sign up.

ECs that you are doing for only a month don’t count. I concur with hudsonvalley51 - AU is not a safety for you.

E

Okay thanks for the advice. I don’t think AU has ever visited my school though :/

Why don’t ECs i’ve been doing for 1 or 2 months count? I’ve still invested myself in them, I just never had the time to do so before.

Any other opinion on my chances? I’m really hoping to get in…

AU would definitely not be a safety for you…maybe a match and even possibly a low reach. Your M + CR is not very high for AU…an 1180? and is commensurate with your grades.

Your background might be a plus for application to AU because of the global emphasis on campus…you might want to stress the world view you might bring to class discussions in one of your essays.

Even if AU is not coming to your school, find out if a regional rep is going to be anywhere near driving distance of you…my son did this when he was applying.

Well my commonapp essay talks about my “global/world” experiences, travels, and their effects on me as a person. Hopefully that will be effective in their opinion. I know my cumulative GPA is low, but hopefully the statement my counselor wrote about that will help out, especially being that my Junior year GPA is a weighted 4.1.

I was hoping my writing part of the SAT would help out, forgot that some schools don’t look at the writing section…

Okay, i’ll try to found out when I could possibly meet a regional rep.

Schools like ECs that you have been involved in for awhile. A month or two before you apply looks like you are doing it to get into college not because of deep interest.

I see, well I hope they won’t focus too much on that, I honestly just didn’t have the opportunity or time prior to the beginning of my senior year to involve myself. (but that’s only for my volunteer work)

Nina, I read your 500 word statement posted elsewhere on this site. You’ve had a very interesting and enriching life. Is there a way you could tighten up your essay a little bit? For example, instead of listing your varied experiences, could you compare the different educational environments in your experience and how they have helped your intellectual development, or how they have helped you appreciate different viewpoints of the same historical events, etc? And illustrate with concrete examples?

You have such an interesting background!

Thank you! I’d love to tweek and change things around but CommonApp won’t let me change my essay or anything like that. All I can do is whatever is in the supplement, and AU only ask one brief question in theirs so…i’m not sure what to do?

You can di a different version of your app with a different essay. If you can’t fond his to di ut on common app site search cc or call commonapp. My daughter sent out different essays to different schools.

Well the commonapp won’t let me, so I should try and do AU’s own application? Cause i’ve looked through everything in the commonapp and it’s all “set in stone” other than the colleges individual supplements where I still have the option to change stuff and fill stuff in.

Anyone know what I could do about this?

Just follow the link …

Thanks! I hope it will work, it would be great if I could edit my personal essay for AU.
