I have a pretty low SAT score of 1280 and a 28 ACT.
Should I apply test optional? How does that affect admission chances?

It depends on the school to which you’re applying and your GPA and extracurriculars. You haven’t told us enough information.

I think you should submit your ACT score as it is the average ACT score according to USNWR (25%) 26-31 (75%) with 28 overall average. I think it’s the better of the two tests unless you had a low area in the subsets. It’s hard to tell because you didn’t break out the sub scores in each test. What is your GPA? Your GPA, Rigor of coursework and interest level are more important than your test scores. Also you do not apply to a specific school within AU, you apply to AU and then declare in your sophomore year. Once you are accepted into AU you can transfer to any school within the AU system.

My SAT subscores were 550 Math and 730 Reading. I have a GPA of 3.85 (W) and 3.7 (UW).

I have taken 8 AP classes and I’m learning 3 languages (French, Spanish, Russian).
How can I best show interest?

You can show interest by visiting American, attending webinars, contacting your Admissions Rep and if your rep is at a college fair near you -attend it.
