Should I apply to Alabama & Ole Miss in July/the summer?

I'm a junior in Virginia right now at a relatively highly esteemed private high school and by the end of this year I'm expecting to have a 3.2(ish) unweighted GPA. My cumulative GPA is significantly lower than that, a 2.88 (UW), because I didn't take my freshman and sophomore years seriously at all and I'm paying for it now. I'm getting better grades this year though, which will hopefully help at least a little bit... I haven't taken the SAT yet so I can't give a score, but I've been taking a prep class and on my last practice test I got a score around 1700 and I'm predicting that I will have an 1800 or higher when I take the real thing.

The classes I'm taking this year and the grades I'm getting in them are...
College Algebra (C)
Spanish IV (A+)
Honors Chinese III (A)
Physics (B+)
US History (B+)
American Literature (B-)
Jazz Band (A)

I briefly talked to a representative from the University of Alabama at a college fair recently and she said to get my application in as early as possible because they have rolling admissions, but I'm just really worried that I'll get denied admission because of how low my GPA is. I want to get into Alabama very badly because I have family who went there and I'm dying to go south of where I live and it seems like a good fit for me. Also, according to my college counselor, no one from my school has ever been denied admission there (and I don't want to be the first!). So what should I do to make my application as strong as possible and should I submit it in July even though my GPA won't be quite up to par?

As for Ole Miss, I would definitely love to be admitted there and I've heard they accept most anyone with a GPA over 2.5 with SAT's over 1400; so when should I apply there and do you think I could get in?

I'm also looking to study music in college, and I'm a drummer and percussionist if that matters!

I'm planning on applying to more schools than just these two in the fall by the way, so if you could give me advice on submitting an intriguing and strong application to every school I apply to it would be very much appreciated!

Thanks!!

What exactly do you mean by low match…?

The University of Alabama’s application for the following academic year usually goes live around the first of July so make sure you watch gobama.ua.edu for that information. The application can be found at apply.ua.edu.

The University of Alabama employs a competitive admission process that includes reviewing and evaluating each application on an individual basis for an applicant’s abilities as a student and a scholar. Decisions about the potential for your academic success at UA are based on your performance on the ACT and/or SAT (note that we do require the writing section), your high school grade point average, and your high school course schedule. A student with a 21 ACT or 1000 SAT (critical reading and mathematical scores only) along with a cumulative gpa of 3.0 should be successful at the University.

We have a great School of Music at Alabama. Plus, we have one of the most well-respected band programs in the country in the Million Dollar Band. The MDB is 100 years old and is over 400 members strong!

I hope this information is helpful. Let me know if you have any other questions and I’ll track the answers down for you. Also feel free to contact your regional recruiter. I’m sure she’s the one you met at the college fair and she’ll be a wealth of information for you. If you don’t have her contact information, look on the gobama.ua.edu site and it will include that information, or you can email admissions@ua.edu.
