Why is that when, on the Common App, I say that I want to apply to Dyson – School of Business – I’m asked to write an essay on the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences? What does one have to do with the other (also, I have zero interest in anything life sciences/agriculture related)?? Does Dyson require you to take useless class in life sciences instead of focusing on a business education? (I want to go into international business, so my electives would largely be in foreign language/culture, global business, etc).
What is the difference between AEM (Applied Economics and Management) and an economics program elsewhere in Cornell?
The whole process is very confusing and I’m having difficulty discerning just what kind of business program Dyson is. Any help?
AEM is a major within CALS, so unless I’m mistaken you will have to complete the CALS distribution requirements.
For anyone curious, the reason AEM is in CALS is because at the turn of the 20th century, the department was known as agricultural economics and was different than what it is today.
So basically the program was originally in agribusiness has been evolving towards a more neutral undergrad business major? That’s actually really interesting in its own way. Would you say that someone without particular interest in agriculture/life sciences (including business applications) would benefit equally from an undergrad business education at Cornell and, say, MIT Sloan?
Yes, agri part is largely gone. You should write about the AEM program, not CALS in general unless it interests you. Good luck! Super competitive, they only take a hundred kids or so.
