Should I apply to more schools?

Hey CC,

Though I was admitted to Berkeley, UCLA, UCSD, etc. as an economics major, I decided to take a year off from being a full-time student. I will be attending my CCC to complete a few prerequisites and reapply to UCSD and UCSB as a math major.

I maintained a 4.0 up until last semester, when due to personal problems, I got a C in my last semester of Calculus and a C in Introductory Statistics. This was very unlike me, but the consequence is that my GPA went from 4.0 to 3.67. I will be taking 9 credits this semester, and 7-11 credits next semester, which honestly won't bring my GPA up much. But I will have all prerequisites complete by the end of Spring Semester (for UCSD, all prereqs completed by the end of this semester.) My IGETC is complete and I am eligible to TAG into UCSD.

I've written a lot here, so let's finally get to the question: Should I apply to more than 2 schools? Last time I applied it wasn't a concern because I had a 4.0 and that's all the schools saw. Now I have 2 C's (from the math department, no less! :( ) and that worries me.

I would only apply to schools you can see yourself going and to and that have your major.

I would DEFINITELY apply to other schools. Although you have an excellent GPA, you don’t want to be in the situation where you get rejected to those two schools and are left with no option but to go back to CC. Do some research into other UC’s Economics programs. For ex. Davis has a couple options with Econ; Managerial Economics (applied Econ) and Economics (theory-based). Always be prepared for worst-case scenario. Unless you’re in the tightest of financial situations, it’s a one-time application fee to apply to these other schools. Definitely worth it to apply to other schools IMO.
