Should I apply to uc berkley out-of-state?

i plan to major in engineering, and i've already been accepted to purdue, my state school. i'm also trying my luck at mit and caltech.

if so, should i also apply to uc berkley? it's the 3rd best nationally in engineering, but i dont know if i want to pay out-of-state tuition when i can go to purdue for free.

any of you guys in a similar situation? opinions?

Berkeley's engineering program is pretty awesome and will really provide you an education up to par with MIT and CalTech. But to answer your question, out-of-state tuition at Berkeley is VERY expensive (~$42,000) and doesn't really make sense unless:

It is your top choice (& your family can afford it).

You don't get into the private institutions (like MIT / CalTech / Harvey Mudd) as these schools only charge maybe 3-5 thousand more than Berkeley. Also, private schools often have a little less bureaucracy with which to contend.

If you can't spell the name right, it probably isn't a school you should go for.

Actually, the OOS tuition is only about $27,000 (total cost of attendance is about $44k).

concur with above. The Cal rep is excellent, but not worth $42k for OOS, IMO. For practically the same money you could go to a private college with smaller classes, reportedly better advising, etc. - also check out Stanford.

^^ Thanks for pointing out that technicality.

I'd apply if I were you. The engineering program is superb; my cousin and his girlfriend both went to berkeley for undergrad engineering and say it was a very good experience and they had lots of career opportunities (my cousin now works at apple).

It'd be good to apply, as it's easier to get into berkeley out of state than it is to get into stanford or caltech. Though if you get into one of the private institutions, i'd suggest you go there instead.
