Should I apply to UMich right now?

Basically, I'm a URM, low-income, first generation, etc. I am first in my class, with strong ECs and I've taken the toughest course load. My only concern is my ACT score. I want to try to go into the Residential/Liberal Arts part of LSA with a concentration in literature. My scores basically go along with what I want to major in...

E-33
M-21
R-32
S-22
C- 27

I want to retest in October. My question is, should I just apply now to UMich with my current scores, or wait until I improve in October? Will my ACT scores keep me out?

Math is one of the easiest sections to improve, even if you don’t think you’re good at math. Science is probably not as easy to improve for most, though.

I’m not sure how much you’ve already prepared for the ACT, but I can tell you that math is very conquerable if you practice it enough. ACT math is very formulaic in the kind of questions it asks: all are very logic based, some try to trick you (and after a while you’ll be able to spot which ones these are), and they require relatively low-level math overall. Get some practice tests and official prep books and work on it. I went from a 25 to a 33 in math, and I don’t consider myself anything close to a math genius. It’s very doable.

As far as applying, I’m not sure how U-Mich is on their acceptance rates in early deadline vs. regular deadline, but in general, I would recommend getting your best possible score before applying. I know that it is a very selective public school. If you’re in-state you have a better chance, if you’re out-of-state you’d have a slightly worse chance probably. But either way, I would guess that 27 is a pretty low ACT score overall for Michigan (composite being the most important score).
