I just got rejected from my EDI school, which is Swarthmore. Now I’m considering Vassar for my EDII. I wish to get in as soon as possible, so this is an important decision.
My stats are 1500 SAT and 790 SAT Math II. I’m international so I don’t have any AP.
GPA: 89/100 UW. Unranked.
I don’t have outstanding ECs - 1 internship, 1 volunteer, and 3 or 4 writing positions at different places.
My essays center on social justice, esp immigration problems. My recs are good - all have very high opinion of me.
I’m an Asian girl, needing a lot of financial aid.
To silence the crickets … you should apply EDII if that’s a school you really want to attend. Because of the general similarities to Swarthmore, I’m assuming you believe it’s a good fit. Your SAT is solid, Math II, as well (although STs are not required.) GPA is on it’s face a little low, but without rank it’s hard to put in context. It’s not the number of ECs, but rather the passion you portray for the ones that mattered to you. Essay seem to be a huge factor - including the shorter supplemental. Your stats aren’t disqualifying, so it would be up to you to wow them with words. And the essays don’t have to be works of art, IMO, but rather a genuine exercise that shows why your recs give a high opinion of you What will you bring to the campus? One small tip regarding essays: change at least a word or two, unless you feel they are absolutely perfect.
As for Swat, I followed the thread and am truly sorry. I was rooting for you. But F it. I’m from near Swat and know a lot of kids who applied last year. Some who were rejected had the better stats and ECs, so who the heck knows. You’ll land somewhere and a light will go on and you’ll start smiling and live happily ever after.
I’m in exactly the same boat but with a different school I got rejected from - I couldn’t decide until I pictured which one I would choose if I got in to every school I’m planning to apply to. Even if I got in to higher reaches that I’m applying to, I would still choose Vassar. If it’s the same for you, I would apply EDII. I think you have a good chance, too.
@CGCC20 @mavisdavis thank you so much for your advice. It was tough getting rejected from my top favorite school - I have to admit that I never imagined I would study at anywhere else but Swarthmore … But then everyone has to grow. Now I’m researching into more schools, keeping myself open to different choices and trying to find my best fit. I would also review my application and fix what needs to be fixed!
Good luck, @mavisdavis !! I hope you will get into your favorite school soon.
